335D - Brake Upgrade ?

Just wondered if anyone had upgraded the OEM brakes for BMW performance 6 pot 17" or similar ?

Does anyone know the spec of the standard stoppers ?

Thanks Spin

I think they are 6pots on the front already. Not sure. E92fan has some BMW performance brakes on his 335i.

The 335d brakes are bigger than an E46 M3's. Compared mine to Baris' off here last monday.

You not happy with the stock set-up?

No, I don't think so. As standard it's the usual BMW single-piston sliding cast caliper shite.

They're not usually praised. The brakes on the normal stuff is adequate but not good enough on the M cars. They are prone to fade, warping and the calipers (like any cheap sliding caliper) can stick.

That's why BMW thought they could earn a bit extra by offering the brakes they should have fitted in the first place as dealer-fit options.

You don't need anything as exotic as an F430 to experience proper brakes. My old S2 has huge four-pot Brembo aluminium calipers all-round and they will not fade even after track abuse.

Xenon, mine never faded at Snetterton in May. I was hammering the f**k out of them also.

I think they're better than they were, I'm really coming from e46 experience. I have done a track day with Roofer from this forum and he took his 335d around Donington at a pace I wouldn't have believed (whilst steering one-handed..) and his brakes more or less stood up to it.

Your wheel design also promotes plenty of air-cooling and the ducting is better on e9x models.

Notwithstanding all that, single-pot cast-iron calipers on a fifty-grand car is a joke. Opposing pistons are not much more and so much better and less crude.

It may be down to my not having completely adapted to moving from a manual box and the loss of engine braking but, Yes, I do find them a little on the weak side when braking from high speeds. I have now learned how to use the paddles effectively to change down when approaching for example an island after a long straight but the brakes still lack the bite of the ones on my 8P S3 and have ultimately done the job but not until inducing a bit of butt clenching !

I'm seriously considering an upgrade but have not come across much info as yet so any links will be much appreciated

Sorry, the 'butt clenching' bit just cracked me up. Arse cheek clenching aside, I totally agree about the brakes being a little weak when braking from high speeds. I do remember experiencing in what my opinion was slight brake fade.

I believe I must have adapted/got used to BMW brakes going from an E90 330i to the E92 335d (both autos). However, now owning something different I fully agree with xenons (Ian's) comments. So far with my current car, I have not experienced any brake fade. None of this is to say the BMW brakes are poor just could be better perhaps.

I'm sure someone will be along to post a link with some ideas for upgrades. Thanks for making me laugh at work btw.

Yep, they are good aren't they. Ever driven a Carrera 4? Bloody excellent brakes.

I'm pretty certain you've said why you no longer have the Cayman S, but just remind me again please. Would you buy another Porsche out of interest?

having gone form a cayman S to a 330D I would guess economy or kids

I say this because I almost bought a one year old example early this year but with a 2 year old my wife branded me selfish as we couldn't all go out together, I can't complain really as she has been very understanding with my car interests

A porsche set up would be excellent, I've already spoken to BMW parts and they don't list an upgrade for the 335d

Why are dealers so shite? The BMW "Performance" range has been out for a while now, as dealer-fit accessories.

There is a 6-pot Brembo manufactured caliper and floating discs available for the e9x.

It depends how much you want to spend really, if your feeling a little brake fade its amazing the difference you can make just by changing to decent pads.

I had these Wilwoods on the E90, which were 6 piston with floating 5/650i discs. About £1500 all in for the fronts

And now have these Brembos on the E46. Nearly £5.5K at UK prices for the front and rears

Indeed, i expected the brakes to fade......but they never. An M6 was easily outbraked, along with more exotic machinery.
The discs went a nice shade of blue, but i always had a good pedal. For everyday use they are fine. BBK's can turn into a pissing contest, and do look nice, but the standard brakes are fine, as are oem pads. imho.
