Amazing this day and age of cell phones

So I'm sitting here at the DMV/BMV and I'm looking around and they have a large 65" TV on the wall and it's playing Raiders of the lost Ark...great movie! I notice that 99% of the people ranging from kids, teenager, young adults all the way up to senior citizens all glued to their cell phones. I can see that the kids, teenagers and 20 something year olds are clearly playing some kind of gaming. The adults are probably on Facebook and the seniors are probably looking at their grandchildren pictures. Just amazing that this day and age people cannot live without their cell phone nor can we operate as a society without knowing what's trending. I must have been almost driven off the road twice just coming here from drivers looking down at their phone than paying attention to the road.

I wanted to hear your guy's opinion on the dependency of your phone and how you need it or don't need it in your lives and how it affects your lives

Internet + cell phone + ecommerce is changing everyday life in front of our eyes. It has done so since the late 1990s and will continue for the next 20 years, give or take a decade.

Dependency? Completely. Things to do:

- check reports from work
- touch base with my Mom during a hurricane in Florida
- order a pair of socks
- apply for a job
- make a dinner reservation
- find the nearest and lowest price gas station
- look up the maintenance status of all vehicles in my family
- read internet car discussion fora

What is your view lsturbointeg?

I'm in my late 40's so I always remember times were simple when there were no such thing as internet and cell phones. I know nowadays I need my phone for everything from buying things, calling family and friends, news, weather and also work related stuff. I just look at my 3 boys and see how lost they would be without their phones. I would tell them get off your phones and go outside and play. They look at me like I'm crazy! I'm just wondering what it's going to be like in the next 10 years

Definitely a mixed blessing. They're super useful and versatile, but you give up a lot of privacy and they can be seriously addictive. I like having mine to futz with when I'm waiting for someone or in line at the store or whatever. On the other hand, it sometimes works against me in that I find it hard to ignore work related stuff that pops up even if I'm supposedly "off the clock."

My biggest peeve with phones is that 99% of the users don't seem to understand that you can easily mute them or put them in vibrate mode in restaurants and theaters and so on. Some jackass sitting behind us at a restaurant the other night had a blaring loud ringtone and kept getting calls. I was like, "WTF!?!! Mute the damn thing!!" But then the idiot at the table next to him got a call and he also had a loud and obnoxious ringtone. You just can't win. My phone is perpetually on mute/vibrate. It's always either sitting on my desk or in my pocket, so the vibrate function is all I need. Plus my watch is connected and it vibrates as well. I wish other folks would use that feature in public.

Just another form of control over the masses. No use resisting.

This picture says it all about my feelings about where our society has gone with cell phones. People have lost the ability to really enjoy life.

Where I see the addiction is while going out to eat. It's very telling who puts their phone on the table and checks it without prompting.

If you're out eating with a significant other, and she/he goes to the restroom; do you feel the need to check your phone while they're away? I bet most would say yes.

It's horrible, I have to get myself to NOT focus on the zombies because it's in your face all the time whenever you're out in the wild. Invasion of the Body Snatchers or some other sci-fi movie where an evil alien species takes over the populace of earth without a shot fired has nothing on these people. iDumbass gadgets just rule these peoples' lives.

Personally, I never take my phone with me anywhere I go now. If it wasn't needed for work I'd never own a smartphone in the first place. It's fantastic to get away from all the crap, and YES life was better before this bullshit technology.

i also hate how quick its made society. like texts need to be answered immediately...

facetiming, texting girls before and after dates...sheeeitt im going to run out of material on the date. wtf happened to hey dinner saturday; pick you up at 7. nope now i gotta send out texts everyday like a fucking press release

everytime i go to a restaurant kids pacified with ipads.

people who are finishing texts instead of replying to people right in front of them.

people who cant follow signs on the road and need google or tesla to steer the car....how difficult is it to take a numbered exit?

many benefits as well. but such a cop-out for everyone in social situations. sit down, go on phone and over stimulate your mind with endless information. what happened to just striking up a conversation to the person next you. they may be a crackhead; but hey now you learned a little more what crackheads behave like

It's really all about quicker communication being available to everyone, every moment... the issue is that this has allowed dumber people to be heard and seen more so than ever before... kids look up to these people and the overall dumbification of society takes place... there is really no way back sadly. I am 32... when I was in middle school no one would dare do anything other than hang out with the other kids, all neighbors knew each other and Halloween was a normal thing... now its all computerized and if your kids roam neighborhoods freely, you are considered a bad parents; that added up with parents not being allowed to yell at kids anymore will one day result in something extremely bad for society... its already slowly being seen.

This is a topic that really gets my blood pressure going. Seeing families out "together" but the three kids, mom, and dad are all glued into their phones. No one talks to each other. They don't even make eye contact with the server when they place their order. The problem is the computer in a pocket no longer allows a task to take place in a specific setting.

Need to type out an E-mail? Well, don't need to go to my office and power on the PC in a specific time and place; I'll just do it here while I'm supposed to be having family time.
Want to have a conversation with someone two thousand miles away? Well, I don't need to step out to make a phone call; I can just text that person right now while I'm half(quarter?)-heartedly interacting with the person in front of me.
Ready to buy those sweet boxer shorts you've been hearing about? Don't need to go to the store, I'll pull the store out of my pocket and order it while I'm buried in my phone at the DMV!

I'm over it. I really am. Full ready for my ranch in the hills. My wife probably wouldn't like the lack of internet, though

I so agree. Everywhere you look, mobile phones.

Now, don’t get me wrong about mobile devices. I use my iPad for so much; however, phones I primarily use of talking/communicating. That’s it.

Heard the same thing about personal computers 35 years ago when I was a kid when computer games and gaming consoles started becoming mainstream. It’s been the same since the dawn of civilization: the older generation saying how the younger generation is dumber and softer.

Being at the DMV and playing on your phone, I get that. What really bothers me is seeing a family out for dinner, and not only the kids playing on their phones, but also the adults. That, to me, is the worst of the worst.

We were at a fairly nice restaurant once where a family kept taking turns playing videos on their phones and showing them to each other. Like it was their living room or something. No concern at all that those sitting around them might not want to listen to their stupid videos.

54 years old here. I remember the PRE COMPUTER age. Commodore 64s and TRS80s and oh lord the first Apple. (God I wish I had the sense to buy some damned stock)

It is honestly sad that people cannot be "alone" anymore. Just to be alone, without the constant companion of a million people.

I passed a house earlier tonight...it had a roaring bonfire.....Every single person was head down on the phone. Crazy. Here... Now.... Face to face is life.....

Phuck the phones.

(written from my laptop with my wife on hers 5 feet away.....no I am not immune.)

Two things to which I can directly relate. Waaaay too much of my life is tied up in cyberspace. And yet I owe my career to the computer age.

Still, a recent anniversary brought me back 35 years to a much simpler and happier time when we actually had to (Gasp!!!!) talk to each other and find things to do that did not involve electrons. At this point I'd give anything to be back there. Maybe that's just a serious midlife crisis talking , though.

we forgot how to connect in the same room while we think that we connect to the world by smart phones.. missing the places while trying to take good selfies, detaching from the moment while trying to take good videos, losing privacy while trying to be more open.. doing my best to avoid those..

Same feelings here. I work in a "techie" job and I understand the need for the tools we have. I also understand that my being older influences me more as I didn't get my first phone until I was in my early 20's. It was work provided and the size of a boat anchor! Today, kids get them at some ridiculous young ages.

But if I accidentally leave my phone at work or at home when leaving either place....I'm definitely not turning around to go back and get it.

I use it for work, looking at this and the Corvette Forum, and have a small circle of friends who are like me....when they get home from work the last thing they want to do is be around a phone.

I have never even had a Social Media account....which is something I don't understand about people. I mean I know some need it for business, but my brother doesn't....and I can't fathom telling people everything I'm doing every minute of the day, or what I'm eating, or how I'm feeling like he does!
