People who prey on elderly are scum

So, I'm in a strip mall yesterday. While walking from my car to the store, I see an old man (had to be 80+) and a younger man (maybe 40) discussing damage on a car. The younger man was pointing out damage and saying look at this? How did this happen? I assumed they were father and son and it was a case of someone hitting their parked car and leaving.

I go about my business, and when I come out of the store the younger man is pressuring the old man about fixing his car. The old man looks uncomfortable. At this point I stop within ear shot and listen to what's going on. I'm staring down the younger man and taking it all in, but the younger man presses on while watching me. He can fix it, he will follow the old guy home. I now notice a pick up truck painted up from some type of repair shop, dent fixer or something parked a row over. The old man gets on the phone while looking very flustered.

I start to leave but my conscience gets the best of me. I get in my car, and drive to where the old man is parked to see what is going on. The younger man is sitting in his idling pick up, reverse lights on. The old guy is getting ready to pull out. I stopped, blocking the pick up from backing out of his spot and waited until the old man pulled out. I watched him exit the parking lot and stayed where I was until he was gone. I then gave the younger man the evil eye and left. I'm not sure if I prevented something from happening, my gut tells me I did although not sure why young man didn't say anything to me.

People suck.

That's all.

Well Done!!

"No mom, the boys are fine. No, they didn't go to Mexico, they haven't been arrested."

An elderly lady came into our PD. She was in TEARS. Target wouldn't sell her a gift card to <insert here> so she could get her granddaughter out of jail.

We have a VIP (Volunteer in Policing) whose ONLY job is to do research and inform several vulnerable communities in the city about these things. She even helped me by going through a single credit bureau and correcting all the bogus info they had on my account. Places I've never worked, addresses I never lived at, phone numbers I never had.

Great Job! should have wrote down everyone's plates, called the cops, and waited while blocking the truck. He was definitely a professional scammer.

Thank you!

I should have, I didn't think, which is odd. I would normally be all over that. I guess because I "left the scene" and walked to my car, I just wanted to see the old man get away.

My SO is NYPD. He thinks the same guy approached him in the same lot a while back. He took pictures and is looking through his phone.

When I was 8 years old, a bike shop here had a really great winter sale. I got this beautiful violet bike, it had a basket and a bell and it was all glossy and shiny. I kept thinking it should be spring already, instead of a stupid October.

My dad ran out of petrol so we pulled in to a station. He was filling the tank and kept looking at this woman with no shoes on who was walking around there (first snow was on the ground). He went to ask her what was going on.

Her son had tossed her out from the car, after stripping her of her shoes because she didn't have more money to give him. She was in a shock. My dad took her into the petrol station, called the cops since the old lady was so shocked she couldn't tell my dad where she lived.

The next spring the shiny bike stood in its spot in the bike rag. The crash from happy to horrified was too much for me.

OP, good for you. Fuck all who are mean to the elderly, the abuse and extortion they experience and the predatory salesmen they face too often are the scum of the earth.

Good for you. I'm glad it didn't escalate and you are okay as well. It was smart to stay in your vehicle, but still be able to help.

I seen a report today about a "fight club" in Winston-Salem in a retirement facility. This makes my blood boil so much!

My brother is also a cop......but I could not be one. I wouldn't be able to separate my emotions from the job.

Imo: Warning about being a Good Samaritan, this case is different and I applaud you but i would rather my son or girls never get directly involved because people that do shit like that to elderly are low and take risks, what's preventing him from stepping out breaking your window?

I'm a contractor in boston, most of my projects are in nice areas around high end retail and beautiful brownstone residential buildings, having a smoke in a alley near my site a woman screams, I go to check it out she said her bag her bag her face looks hit in the mini struggle

I ran knowing what direction he was going taking a short cut only seeing the back of him, big blue jacket baseball cap my size'ish

I caught up with him, give me the bag and no trouble, HE TAKES HIS (BOX CUTTER) out to slash me, in defense-mode now I just get my arm and hand cut, the MF dropped the bag then ran

I returned the bag to the woman, it WAS children's sneakers, I told her here is you fucking 👟 I risked major injury because of your rape assault scream

she should've not fought back when the crack head grabbed the bag, she should've said don't go after him it's just sneakers

I tell my kids if robbed just take off what they want do not roll around and fight for objects your safety is most important

Dripping blood and having his saliva on me from our struggle I felt dumb, why did I get involved?!?

Sorry for the rant, just want all to be safe

Thank you - I know. I felt safe being in my car, during the day with lots of people around. I did not want to confront him face to face, especially being a girl and all.

I've done stupid stuff in the past, like grabbing the guy that ripped a chain off my neck by the throat. It was just an immediate reaction, not thought out. Afterwards I kind of fell apart, thinking what could have been.

I would not be a hero for something stupid - material. This was just wrong.

Just thought of another stupid action on my part. I was in HS, nasty neighborhood at the time. As I was walking down the steps to the subway, both trains had just left. I get on the platform and three guys are walking towards me. No one around, just us. I try to go to one side so I'm not walking directly in their path (think benches in the middle) and they come my way. The guy in the middle grabs me around the waist and pulls me in. I had my arm in front of my body, holding my pocketbook. I backhanded him across the face and told him to keep his f'ing skeevy (sp) hands off me and kept walking. Well, his friends laughed their asses off. I was dying. That could have gone really bad. This was 40 years ago. I haven't thought about this in years.

What is of little/no value to you can be really valuable to others (well, imagine a child missing a birthday gift because of that incident). You saw there was no rape assault, didn't you? You should evaluate your own risks. You could step (or even run ) back when you saw the cutter. It was your pride in the way, wasn't it? So why did you blame the woman? It was your failure to do it safely. But your pride was against admitting that.

And by the way, I wouldn't check the bag.

Regarding the evaluation of the situation. It's really important to do it rather than just step in: you can not only take an "excess" risk (to regret or blame whoever if that makes you feel any better ), you can take the wrong side (which is far worse). Of course, when things happen quickly you have no time to investigate and contemplate, but when you can you'd better do, I suppose.

She could have a pride, like you , but a different one. Some people hate being mistreated. I still remember a classmate taking away from me an apple my mother had given me to eat at school. It was a nice one, undoubtedly tasty, but what was really important to me was the humiliation. He was bigger and stronger, I did not believe I could fight back to gain anything but some physical damage as well. So I did not. But I do understand and respect those who act differently. After all, you never really know before you try. That woman succeeded in keeping her property.

I had two guys trying to rob me once. I just ran away. It could be a smart move, widely suggested, but I don't think I will again. It's not that I'm ashamed or something, it just didn't feel comfortable. There are important things like having your life the way you want, not just any way. It's also important to let those scumbags realize they shouldn't. But there's a cost. If you can take it, you should, perhaps.

To the guy with no name and from no place with 3/1 posts ratio

I'm not prideful, it's more like fight or flight, I was angry at the woman because it was just regular sneakers, it's a high end retail area (she did not look like she uses coupons)

I don't like to get involved but the screams got my attention, before I realized what's happening I'm already running after him

after speaking to her about the sneakers she realized she should of just let the bag go (not to fight back) she too just reacted without thinking

Like the OP, she fought back when someone wanted her necklace, adrenaline, better thinking didn't kick in until after

I can't be aggravated because I got cut for sneakers? She screamed like she was being abducted?!?

You can decide what to get cut for (it was your choice). If the bag were full of money, would you've suggested a split?
