E90 Down! E90 Down! Updating Failure
I am in a world of trouble right now with my 2006 325i E90. My car was running well but had a slightly hard downshift when coming to a complete stop. The only lights on the cluster were the seatbelt and airbag lights at that time. My friend has access to a scanner it's the autel maxi sys elite so he recommended scanning for codes. There were a lot of stored codes so he deleted them all and somehow without my knowledge began updating the entire car without and power supply connected. The scanner said in top corner "bmw v13.1" which was obviously the software version. After the update I went to drive the car and I have abs light brake light gearbox wheel speed sensor all kinds of things have malfunctioned such as the auto cancellation for the blinkers, the windows don't work now , I believe the water pump isn't turning on, there's no a radiator blind message all sorts of code. Seems that rad2 gateway and abs modules are not communicating with the scanner now. The car is a mess. When I told my friend that the voltage can't drop on these cars while coding or programming he said "bro the voltage was 13.1 the entire time." He thought the version number was the voltage apparently despite the fact that voltage is always moving and would not stay at 13.1 when the car is on. I need help desperately. I have a kd can cable and I've managed to get standard tool functioning on a laptop if mine but ista or rheingold from bimmergeeks downloads won't run I'm using windows 7 32 bit operating system. If someone could help me restore my car to the way it was (if this is possible to do now) I am willing to pay for the help. I'm not rich but I could pay for your time. I strongly feel this is over my head and I don't want to cause any more problems but I need my cars functionality back...it's the vehicle I use for work. I can borrow the autel maxi sys elite scanner still and it's a very capable scanner if it will assist somehow. Also I am pretty computer literate At least I know basic computing. I'm hoping somebody call undo this major screwup. I really blew it letting someone mess with the car. He was only supposed to pull codes not perform an update ....
Thank you for reading my post and for any help or advice you can offer. |

For ista d to work you must have all the microsoft C++ excutables installed
and netframework 4.7 or better. Describe you ista d errors. Everything must be done from the Admin login when dealing with this stuff. Also the first thing I would do with Inpa is go to functional jobs and get screenshots of what is going on with the Hardware Id's (hardware and software) Your problem sounds similar to this. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1367176 Try searching for bricked title only advanced search here. By the way have recharged your battery. Last edited by ctuna; 10-18-2019 at 08:44 PM.. |

Thank you again for your reply. All prerequisites have been installed and I am
Running in admin mode but I think I did something wrong maybe during setup of ista. When the install notes say to move rheingold folder to c:\program files (x86). I don't have that folder so I used c:\program files wherever it called for c:\program files(x86) not sure if that causes my problem or not. Ista give me no error it just shows the hourglass icon for about a min after clicking on ista than the hourglass goes away and nothing at all happens. I will check out Inpa right now just got home Form work I've had a battery charger on a trickle charge regularly since the car is down and check voltage with the Meter |

Also I have read through that entire thread about 4 times now and I am in a very similar situation except the op seems to have a decent understanding of what he's doing and he's got icom and a good power supply. I really don't know where to obtain things like the "vo" or when using Ncs expert when I go to load profile I choose factory coding choose e89 chassis input the vin than it asks me for "GM, SA, VN" which I assume VN is the vin number but I question that because the vin number was entered on the previous screen. I have no idea where to find the info that it's asking for or what it is asking for than do you select calculate checksum. Also when it asks to choose ECU There is a list of 7 showing but I'm thinking that there is a specific order these should be programmed in because some are dependent upon the others I think I'm just in over my head here because I really don't know much about bmw yet in general let alone all this programmning

Step one if Select Inpa if Inpa is working go to functional jobs and get a screenshot
of all the modules. The first link below tells you how to do this. F2 and F3 in functional jobs. The screen shot should look like FkingBears in his first entry in the thread listed. There will be a learning curve for this stuff. Bimmerprofs tells you how to get the List of what can be read by Inpa functional jobs. Don't worry about recovering modules by reflashing till you know which ones are corrupted. I believe the x86 program folder is only present on a 64 bit computer or vice a versa this should not stop you though. diagnostic manual ista/inpa https://bimmerprofs.com/diagnostics-inpa-part-1/ https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...xo19teM9vkTF-C https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...7x8H3pN8h1fMuF https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...-P-actually-do http://www.**************/showthread...-for-Beginners **** = B M W c o d i n g.com it has lots of tutorials for beginners . you should be able to get away with a K/D can cable on a 06. Process of recovery is the same. ista d Did you unpack ista d with the 7 zip file extractor it's a zip file. 1. Make sure you have a functioning Standard Tools install. You can obtain this from our site with instructions inside. 2. Install all items in the "Pre-Install" Folder 3. Move "Rheingold" folder to c:\program files (x86) 4. Create shortcut for IstaGUI. It is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Rheingold\TesterGUI\bin\Release 5. Move that shortcut to the "Bmw Tools" folder from your Standard Tools" install from step 1 and rename IstaGUI to "Ista" 6. Launch Ista and complete setup. When prompted for license, copy and paste the entire contents of the IstaLicense.txt file from this download. ***If you have issues launching ista and recieve a "failed to start" error, launch as administrator. The regular Program Files folder holds 64-bit applications, while "Program Files (x86)" is used for 32-bit applications. Installing a 32-bit application in a PC with a 64-bit Windows automatically gets directed to Program Files (x86). Last edited by ctuna; 10-19-2019 at 12:47 AM.. |

Based on the Inpa screen shots it looks like your FRM module software is Blown up.
This seems to be a common failure here when updating. Even happens at BMW shops with all the proper cautions taken. Look for FRM resurrection threads. It may be the only module blown up in any case it is the first thing I would try to fix. All the other errors may or may not clear after this. https://www.e90post.com/forums/searc...rchid=63092873 Last edited by ctuna; 10-19-2019 at 07:12 PM.. |

I would just worry about the FRM first I would have to look up the other module.
electical e90 pdf http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...,d.cGU&cad=rja http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...85464276,d.cGU http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...85464276,d.cGU Description of modules in the above link. This is what a healthy printout of those two modules should look like . Notice that all the data about the FRM can is readable. |

Wow frm restoring looks like a complicated procedure but like the opportunity to learn how this is done. I'm wondering if the autel maxi sys elite scanner has the original backed up in its memory or not I'm gonna have to research that. However that scanner found abs and rad2 gateway modules to be non communicating also it did say frm as well

We have no idea of what your autel scanner can do but you are not
the first one here that has tried to update of program on another scanner and had problems. The expertise here is all on BMW standard tools and the Ista d and p programs. These programs were made by BMW for BMW's Again Frm fails during programming are a common problem . And usually no matter how you are updating this it will take out only one module. That is why it's safer to update one module at a time through Winkfp. If you read up on what factory programming and manipulation programming is it will explain that a copy of the programming for each module in the car is kept in the FRM and CAS module. Factory programming is what comes with the car this is called the VO (Vehicle Order)which is a copy of the settings for each module. One copy in the CAS and one In the FRM for redundancy . NcsExpert is the program used to return modules to stock or what is contained in the VO if you have modified it. If somebody can chime in on factory coding with one of those modules bad and how that work or if it work's that would be helpful. Also you may be able to find a used FRM on ebay or in the buy and sell here some people upgrade to the newer version to add affermarket lights and the newer versions are more friendly to that. I would start asking what a virts92 module is I think it might be transmission I am not sure. Haven't seen people talk about that one much. It looks like its corrupted to though. I noticed Rhiengold folder (ista D) is not in your C directory which it should be to work. Last edited by ctuna; 10-20-2019 at 03:29 PM.. |

Hey ctuna, man I appreciate very much that you are making an effort to help me and have stuck by the thread to help out and give advice . That's really cool of you and I just want to say THANK YOU very much.
I'm Listening to everything you say and I have been doing research on this and if what I read today is accurate it seems an uograded frm would allow my daytime running lights as angel eyes ..is this correct ? If so it's probably easier to grab a newer upgraded module and just worry about coding it to the vehicle. Rather than get all involved in D-FLASH, EEEPROM, and P-FLASH dumping and programming on this bricked module. I learned a good lesson from this trig nothing else. As far as the rheingold folder goes the setup instructions that I unzipped from the BG's Downloads page clearly said to "move rheingold to c:\program files (x86)" , which I was saying I do not have this folder possibly due to running windows 7 32 bit operating system. This is what I was talking about when I said that instead I just used the folder "c:\program files" instead. I don't believe it says to copy rheingold to the the c: drive as shown in the attached picture lines 3 and 4 I thought I was following the directions but I was confused where to move rheingold to since the specified folder is not on my computer. I had thought of creating the folder maybe I should have done that. Also attached is a pic of the E90 that is down right now. I bought this thjng insanely cheap and installed a radiator and a couple coils some new hoses and coolant. All together I have less than $800 into this car. Meanwhile while this module Is bricked is there a way to Hotwire the windows to go up I tried using a battery and connecting to the motor but nothing happened. I know the two thicker wires control up and down. But I probably wasn't doing it right I'm having to leave another car outside that has a competition winning audio system in it because cats were pissing inside of the E90 as the windows are down. Even though it's a cheap car I'm not gonna allow that shit to continue so it's parked it in the garage but I'd like to get the windows up and get her out of there. |

Seems funny you don' have and x86 folder.
The example I put up is Windows 10 running on a 64 bit laptop. I waited till win 10 to upgrade 7 and Wind 10 is better it used to be a free upgrade. I would try moving it into program files and adjusting the command path accordingly. Or just find the app inside the rhinegold folder and make a shortcut for starting it to the diesktop there. I put my starting icon/shortcut right on the desk top. I think the root directory c: may be were I unpacked it. I have another copy inside x86. Look for a car cover maybe. Might be worth just plugging in a FRM to see if the windows would go up. Last edited by ctuna; 10-21-2019 at 01:18 PM.. |

I did all of that last night to no avail. Ista won't launch from anywhere. I have a windows 10 laptop with touch screen and ssd drive that I didn't want to use for this but I'm going to try to get it installed onto there and see what happens

Until all tool(BMW standard tool:Ediabas, inpa, winkfp, and updated sp datens and IstaD or IstaP) run properly on the laptop, progress would be stuck.
These are preliminary requirement to be able to proceed. Thank you. |

For the life of me I can't get ista up and running. I am fairly computer knowledgeable to I've followed the instructions I've completely reformatted my hard drive than installed windows 7 professional 64 bit standard tools installation goes fine inpa is running at first it wouldn't detect the k+dcan cable because the cable is supposed to be used with 32 bit windows but I figured that out downloaded some drivers set to com1 latency to 1 all is good. I unpack ista open the pre install folder installed everything I figured out that the order is wrong in the folder 1st pre-install should be the 2013 Microsoft files not the 2015 but anyways they all install than I move rheingold to c:\program files(x86). Then I go to c:\program file(x86)\rheingold\testergui\bin\release and create a shortcut for "Istagui" on the desktop than move it to the bmmw tools folder icon and rename the shortcut to Ista. When I launch ista the spinning wheel pops up than windows asking for permission to allow ista to make changes I select ok or yes whichever it is the spinning wheel comes on again and then nothing happens I've tried on a windows 8 and 10 laptops to and the exact thing happens. I don't know what the f#%* I'm doing that is wrong here ? Is inpa supposed to be running while you install ista ?? Do you only rename the istagui shortcut to ista? Or the file in rheingold to I've tried this everywhich way?!!! Help please !!

A k/d can cable won't care if its a 32 bit or 64 bit computer.
(its a serial line) You must have netframework 4.7 and all the microsoft C++ excutables installed. Don't see why you wouldn't want to use Windows 10 as all that stuff mentioned above is usually in place with windows 10. Also it's faster and better. You can try starting ista D right in the Rhiengold folder. You must do it as and administrator. I put the ista gui short cun on the desktop though is should work from anywhere. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1606074 This guy had quite few problems see following link https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1581663 Last edited by ctuna; 10-25-2019 at 12:32 AM.. |

I suggest to flash only the frm using winkfp with latest datens file.
Other modules seem to be OK. Getting IstaD up and running is sometime tricky, all the prerequisite framework and vcredist. * must be installed. Yet ISTAD will probably no help in fixing the Frm fault since it need programming which IstaD aka rheingold won't do, IstaP will do programming and coding but will not select individual module, it will flash and code all available module at one go with Icom interface or other j2354 compliant interface. I used IstaP to update my 328i last week successfully. |

I agree that using standard tools working would be the most
important thing to have going for this repair. But it's pretty nice to have ISTA D going as it's all in 'engilsh and the technical data base attached really make it easy to find all you need about a particular part.s procedure schematics and maintenance procedures. |
