Halogen to xenon w/attachment: BMW Retrofit Guide

Edit: I wanted to bump this as more people are actually doing the retrofit now, and may find this helpful.

Regarding the "chip" that some say is reqd so that the error message doesn't show, do you think that is the footwell module or item G?

I have halogen and am thinking about both as well. I want xenon bc of the look of the headlight, but i think a xenon kit will be brighter, as well as cost less. If it is a hassle to swap to xenon, i will just get the kit.

I dont know if anyone has done that, and their results. Not that its a big deal, other than the one concern of how it will look and if it will blind oncoming traffic or not.

But, coming from a Xenon car and going to Halogen is absolute sh*t. Its hard to go back. Even If I don't get the angel eyes, I'll settle on the kit to, because Xenon lighting is just so much clearer and lights up the road so nicely, angel eyes or not. You can always try it, and, later if you wish, get the housings ($$). At least you won't waste money on it, because either way, you'll have to get the kit to change the format.

Good italian!
I've bought a pair of xenon (lenticulars) headlights complete from a friend of mine in Germany at $ 1.100. Then I'll take the car to mechanic to install all the items. Is very simple (he said!), just plug and play the connectors. Then is very probable that the cars sign light error (because xenon absorb only 35w instead 55w for the halogen). In that case you have to go to BMW mechanic that can eliminate with computer the error. Tomorrow I'll take my car to mechanic and in the next days I'll tell you if all go OK.
Sorry for my english, is worse than your italian.

Well, your English is pretty good, no worries. When you say "headlights complete" what do you mean? the headlamp housings, plus wiring, ballast, harness, xenon bulb too?

Most of the xenon headlamps are just housing, without the parts you need.

Did you buy it from the Auction you stated?

ciao

P.S.: Scroll up to the top, I have the retrofit guide in my first post. it is in pdf format. You may find it helpful to take to the mechanic

I've bought directly in Germany. I've contact with a friend in Regensburg. If you want I'll ask him for another pair. They are complete with ballasts and xenon bulbs. Price about $ 1.100

I just spoke to the head technican at the BMW dealer where I purchased my car ans he said to do the swap, It will be pretty pricey, because there are numerous things to buy, besides just the headlights. He also said that you most likely will viod out some part of your warranty if you put on an aftermarket intake, other than DINAN.

What is DINAN?
If i could have problems with warranty I'll mantain my halogen headlight as spare parts. I can always replace xenon headlight.
I'll not install an aftermarket kit but the original ballasts and lamps.

Dinan is like a bmw official aftermarket company. With their parts, it adds to your warranty.

What is the general consensus now... is it a mandatory to have the chip in order to avoid error messages?

Some people said yes, some said no.... any verdict?

i'm not gonna do this mod unless there is no error message, it is mandatory to have the module to avoid error messages ( i only say this because 2 people ive read about have done it and recieved error messages)......but, dankim showed us the part and the part number to the chip but he had someone else install it, so im still not totally sure it will work, or if i will be able to put the module in myself???? or if anything is needed to be done to the car after i put the chip in??? is this even something my dealer can do? ive talked to a bunch of dealers in my area and they have ppl ask all the time bout the conversion but they've yet to see it done, im stuck between a rock and a hard place

I completly feel u on that one Golf...I have no idea if and or where this damb chip even goes but looking into the xenon retrofit guide it does look like G is what we need it controls everything it looks like!!
One of us just needs to grow some balls and take our car to the dealer and tell em whats up after the conversion...I may just suck it up and do it..
The worst they could tell me is no..And fuk em the cars mine anyway Pink is on its way its not like its a lease or anything..
Im really stuck on the rock right now..
