Clunk when decelerate and accelerate a low speeds
Hello!
I have a new problem with my 2006 330i. I've notice that when I'm in traffic at low speed, there is a clunk under the car every time I release the pedal or I accelerate. It happens in those cases when you use the brakes very little, and just keep accelerating and decelerating to mantain certain speed in traffic (15 mph). Every time I accelerate, I can hear a noise (a "clunk") and can feel like if something engages under the car, and when I suddenly release the pedal (without applying brakes) to reduce speed, I can hear and feel it disengaging. If I accelerate-decelerate-accelerate-decelerate, I hear and feel clunk-clunk-clunk-clunk. I sounds to me like a play between two gears or something similar under the car. Like if the linkage between the transmission and the differential is going bad. I would think in flex disc (guibo), but I replaced it a year ago when was having the 2-1 jerking issue, before replacing solenoids. I thought that was the problem. Maybe someone has any idea or has had same issue. It is really annoying driving at low speed in traffic with this problem. |

Sounds drive shaft related. Likely a bad U joint. BMW will tell you they can't be replaced and to buy a new shaft. However there are drive shaft shops that change them and do a good job at it.

If you can duplicate the sound, then get a helper to do gear changes while you listen (safely from the side at ground level, NOT beneath vehicle ;-) to determine source of sound/ impact. It could be ANYWHERE in the Drive Shaft joints/ bearing, front motor mount, transmission mount, even exhaust bracket. Simply putting it on a lift and looking at it won't necessarily identify the source of the clunk. Unless it's something REALLY broken & obvious, you need to hear/ feel the clunk & unwanted movement from beneath the vehicle. As always when working/ observing beneath vehicle, THINK & STAY SAFE. Right now that symptom is back again but not all time. I think it has to do with other factors (serviced the transmission and reset adaptation 4 months ago, Disas and Excentric Shatf Sensor went bad, and others). Will try XHP stage 1 in a few days and see. But if your e90 is Manual Transmission, then my experience means no help to you I think. |
