BMW etiquette – are daytime running lights on okay?

I see that I have the option to set the car so that daytime running lights are on all the time.

Is this allowed and acceptable?

On by default on the e92, but the e92 uses 35w bulbs in the corona rings whereas the e90 and e91 actually switch the xenon headlamps on so to all intents and purposes you are driving around with the headlamps on, a la Volvo. So I wouldn't.

On the e92 only the corona rings light up with DRL but at 35w they are brighter than the e90/e91 corona rings which are just sidelights.

As your car has xenons I don't know why they didn't make it like the e92 and use the corona rings as proper DRL.

Of course, they may have changed it with the new model year - set the DRL to on using the computer and have a look. If the xenon low-beam is on then I wouldn't bother but if it's the rings only it looks OK.

Ian wasn't there something about E90's also having a separate halogen bulb for the flashers, where as the E92 flashes the Xenon’s ?

Yes, the e90 doesn't have the 35W H8 bulb for the corona rings but it does have a high-beam H7 (55W) bulb. Therefore when you flash it flashes the halogen. In essence the xenon-equipped e90/e91 is the same as the e46.

Is this because its bad for the lights or just cos its not the done thing? I have an 05 E90 and was under the impression that during the day its only the side lights that come on and its only at night that the sensors put on full beam. Is this correct?

not full beam! Sidelights as daytime running lights are pointless as they are not bright enough. On the e92 it uses the H8 bulb which is not as bright as dipped beam but much brighter than a 5W sidelight would be. As the e90 does not have the 35W bulb fitted it uses the normal dipped beam as DRL.

IIRC correctly it's mandated from 2011 on all cars.

I have tried twice with the previous E91 with Xenons and with the last dealer with the new E91 to get them to programme the Auto light function to leave the corana rings on as DRL's and then switch on the Xenons on automatically when it becomes dark enough (as per E92's). Three times they failed to do this via the service dept computer reprogramming. Idiots.

i leave my corona rings ( sidelights / angel eyes / halos) on all the time. I leave the switch in the upright '0' position. I like the saftey aspect of it ... nah , actually i just like posing

your original question - are they aceptable to leave on , yeah of course they are. They are quite stylish and a lot less aggressive than the overly bright audi chav lights

I have mine on sometimes, but on the e90 (till the facelift) it is the just like having the headlights on, and my Xenons are on.. and these can be too bright at times.

Still even in auto mode my xenons come on often when there is enough light.

It's allowed and acceptable like any other bling i.e. 1 diamond ear ring or gold teeth etc.

Had a Volvo before the 335d and I can truthfully say that having lights on during the day saved me twice from getting side swiped from some impatient, ignorant driver.

Sod etiquette, headlights on during the day, will save your car from being hit and then sitting in a body shop being repaired!

We live in a “get out of my way, I don’t give a s**t society.

Cool

Have my coronas on all the time. It does look good on the 92/93.

I also have one of the new A4s (company cars) with the OTT DRLs. I still leave them on though! Been a motorcyclist for years so its just natural for me.

I always have my dipped beems on too, far safer and people tend to move over when you come up behind them in the outside lane doing more than the 50mph they are doing!!

DRLs are bad. Not only do they look daft but apparently they kill bikers too.
