N54 turbo options for track course use.
This seems to be the one topic I can't find much information about online.
2010 e92 335i xdrive 6MT. I am going to spend the winter starting to transition this car into a track day platform. Not drag, just road course fun. My turbos are pretty shot and rattle. Need to replace. The missing information I am seeing is what upgraded set, or even a good rebuild of OEM, is proven to work well and be reliable for the track with a 450-500AWHP goal? I don't have crazy goals, as I think those are more for straight line performers, I am looking for what will hold up to real usable power in a AWD platform. BTW, the car is already FBO and MHD stage 2+. 5" stepped HD FMIC, Injen dual intake, Full DP, charge pipe and BOV, etc etc. I went ahead and invested in supporting upgrades but then found out there was no hiding horrific WG rattle. They have got to go. The thing is, stock turbos are about $1,500 to replace with OEM (FCP Euro). They are also about $1,500 to send to Turbo Labs and be rebuilt and upgraded slightly, plus be more reliable. THEN, it is also about $1,500-$2k to replace them with a pair of upgraded VTT/Pure/DAW/etc. So....How does one spend $1.5-2K the wisest when the turbos need to be replaced? |

Your last sentence was confusing, how are you calculating "then, $1,500-2k" for upgraded turbos? You're looking at minimum $2,500-$6k+ for upgrade options just for the turbos not including labor.

For a road course car you will want stock or stage 1 turbos to reduce lag. You will also want a bigger intercooler, IMO. That, inlets, and a custom tune will make your car a solid track machine. I don't believe AWD cars can do the M3 control arm upgrade, but tires and suspension should also be at the top of your list if you haven't upgraded those yet. Also brakes. The e9x brakes are good, especially the sport package. If you don't have the sport package, though, upgraded brakes will help you more than an extra 50 horsepower.

There are a few sub $2,000 turbo options for the N54. Vtt has some, FrankenTurbo, DAW, Pure. Then there are a few places that will take your stock and rebuild them, and upgrade, for a little less. Or, you can get new CHRAs and rebuild/upgrade DIY.
Anyway, I agree with all of the suspension, braking, and safety upgrades. I actually won't get on the track without replacing my main bushings and moving up to BC coilovers. That is all a need as my suspension is old and I won't even bother to risk it. No options for M3 stuff up front but there are other options. My intentions are to have good low end, as little/no turbo lag as possible, and a good reliable amount of power that is realistic. I don't need something designed to push well over 600hp, as I would never tune it for that high. I also don't want to be doing 450-500 and pushing near the top edge of what the turbo is rated for all the time. |

I'm honestly leaning toward Pure600's if I go with a whole new setup. They are on promo in a few spots for about $1,800.
Even I have to admit people seem to say Pure more than any other turbo brand when you look for recommendations. The other two big names I am getting tired of seeing them jump in on a forum post just to chime in and sling mud at ANY other brand. |
