Slight super charger whine sound from engine? N52

I’m getting a funny whining sound when I rev out the motor, usually full throttle, between 2-4K rpms.

It almost sounds like 1/5 of a super charger whine. Anyone else hear this sound on their n52?

Like a squeal? What oil filter did you use?

It's your super charger, the silencer must be going out

No squeal. Just did new belt and tensioner. Also, added an aftermarket intake tube with OEM filter box. Maybe it’s the straight tube that’s changing sound. But it’s not typically intake whooshing sound, intake definitely a mini supercharger whining sound.

OEM oil filter, changed every 5k miles or so.

Could be power steering pump

Also these motors have timing chains which aren't 100% silent, you may be hearing this (I wouldn't worry about it if it is)

Actually in general, these motors don't sound great except for the exhaust.

Interesting. I also swapped an m3 steering rack and replaced fluids to OEM, roughly started hearing that sound after the install.

It happens when going straight though, no strange sounds when turning.

Try running the water pump bleed procedure and see if that's the noise you're hearing. The water pump can make a whine noise.

Power steering pump runs all of the time, not just when turning. That is why they went to electric, to save energy while not turning.

Usually when people equate power steering whine to turning its because their fluid is low and it runs dry. You might have air in the system.

More likely that if youre belt setup is good. If it happens when you rev likely not related to water pump since that is electric now.

Does it occur with the A/C off? When my A/C was low on refrigerant, it made a supercharger-like sound.

When I was young(er) and dumb(er) I removed the entire box and put a pod filter right off where the back of the box fit. The motor screamed like a drill on throttle, granted it ran like crap but it was pretty noisy. Put the box back on and it sounded normal afterwards. It seemed like it's just the induction noise these motors make.

Makes the same noise regardless if ac is on or off.

I heard this in the '09 I just bought. My '07 never made the noise. Not sure what it is either, but my first guess is the steering pump or alternator.

Gotcha. The only other thing I can think of is that the 6L45 (GM Automatic) makes a bit of a whine. V6 Camaros used to use the same trans and they make the noise too.

Did this just start or did it always make the sound?

My car makes a whining sound that is associated with engine RPMs; I can hear it in gear or in neutral. I removed the accessory belt and the wine is still there, leading me to believe it's the cam chain and from what I read on this site it's completely normal for the N52.

Not sure what a whipple charger is , but check out 15% off on Amazon for a C-Tek charger.

If the whining sound is not there in Neutral or Park, then likely it is not the transmission (fluid pump).
