Tires feathering at 5k!

The tires on my '08 e90 with Sports Package are all feathering at 5,000 miles...

I check my tire pressure monthly to ensure I am at 32 psi cold.

All my rims are 100% perfect as I am very careful to make sure I don't hit any curbs etc.

I am running Bridgestone Potenza RE050A II RFT w/ 225/45R17 front and 255/40R17 rear.

I noticed that there was a recall on the EL42s with the exact same condition that I have but Potenza RE050A II aren't included...

http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B360606g.htm

...thoughts?

9/19/08 Update:

Dropped off car at dealership today. Service advisor acknowledges that front tires are feathering.

After tech had an opportunity to check tire pressure and inspect condition of rims, SA requested that I call BMW Customer Relations as my specific tire (RE 050 II RFT) are not covered in the above mentioned TSB...

...there goes my SA's "5s" on his survey!

11/8/08 Update:

Called BMWNA customer relations in regards to threading and they claimed that tire have no warranty and to speak with Bridgestone.

Called Bridgestone customer relations and they told me to have my alignment checked at an authorized Bridgestone retailer.

Went into my local Bridgestone authorized retailer to have my alignment checked and tire condition looked at. Retailer found my alignment to be perfect and the feathering concern to be valid.

Went back to Bridgestone customer relations to escalate the claim. Bridgestone claimed that my tires were "out of stock" and were being shipped from Japan...

After 6 weeks of negotiating, all 4 tires have been replaced under warranty by Bridgestone, mounting, balancing, and disposal included.

8/7/09 Update:

Took vehicle in for 1st scheduled maintenance at 15.5k.

Informed Service Advisor of previous ordeal.

Service Advisor states that BMWNA is willing to replace all 4 tires with non-Bridgestone RFTs - either Continental or Michelin.

I would go to the dealer prior to 10k miles to give yourself a chance of getting them replaced. Feathering at 5k miles is unacceptable especially if you are certain that the tires were properly inflated.

Have you done a search to see if this is a reoccurring issue with 17'' ZSP tires?

Bridgestones SUCK....Go with Michelins. They're a little more expensive, but worth every penny

Yup, I have an appointment w/ the dealer in a couple Fridays.

I've done a search and it has been inconclusive since the exact same issue persists with the EL42s.

Ouch...I don't see Michelins avail as a RFT, which Michelins are you using?

...and I presume those pics are from your RFTS from the factory?

IIRC, you are indeed running RFTs. Which Michelins are they, and how do they feel compared to the OEM?

I should add - I think the OEM RFT tires are pretty good. I have around 15K on mine now, though, and they're getting a bit worn. I'll be looking at new tires probably sometime next summer.

That's how the RE050 wears. My buds S2000 with the same tire but non runflat look the same at 3k miles. You should see how Conti sport 3's wear, they are no better. Give you tires another 5k to 8k miles and they will be singing down the road.

I have to ask the obvious. Are your tires properly inflated? Also isn't this caused when the car has too much toe-in or the camber is off? Do you recall hitting a large pot hole or anything that could have thrown off your alignment?

If they are run flats they are probably the Pilot Sport 2 ZP. I havent tried them yet but hopefully they have the same manners as the regular PS2 which are a great performance tire.

Yup, tires are properly inflated to 32 psi cold, checked monthly.

I am careful not to hit pot holes while driving!

but from what i've read on the forums, i don't think the dealers are able to take care of tire problems under warranty. you might have to call the customer relations toll free number that is printed inside the roadside assistance handbook and complain with BMW NA there.

That was my plan going forward if the dealer wasn't able to help me out.

fix it now fast

I have had my car for 4 months and after 2k miles (2 months ago) I noticed the tires feathering and gettin louder. Michelin RFT Pilots

Went to the dealer and they told me my allignment was off by 10 degrees (front) 6 degrees (back), it is a known fact that not all cars are aligned properly at the factory.

After alignment the car was quieter, handled much better and now at 3800miles it is not feathering at all.

I am an expert on feathering because I had a 2003 nissan 350z with bridgestone tires that always showed signs of feathering and had over 16 tires swapped out at nissans expense
As for tire pressure I run 38psi back and 36 front still no feathering

Is it same to assume that the dealer took care of the issue under warranty?

Dealers will "take care" of it if you have road hazard protection and even then it is the warranty company "taking care" of the tires...

After reviewing different tires on Tirerack.com, I decided to go with the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 ZP (Runflat tires). They were a little more expensive ($1400 set of four), but I just couldn't bring myself to buying more Bridgestone Runflats. I've only got 500 miles on the Michelins so my review is not extensive. In my opinion, they grip better, ride smoother, and I get better traction in wet conditions. For some reason, these Michelins seem to run out of inventory on Tirerack very fast, so check back often (everyday)

You may have read recently that a version of PS2s (RFT) are being used on the new Corvette ZR1, and they are fantastic....so if you are going to own a sporting vehicle, why not invest in the best tires that you can?

Nice choice!

I ran PS2s on my E46 for years. Great performance tire but also keep in mind it is not an all season tire...Once the temp drops outside it will go from a top notch performer to Fred Flintstone rollers.

Am I blind? I don't see even an incling of feathering on the tires in those pics. They look perfectly normal to me. Can you post another with a circle around the feathering maybe?
