Buy American or Get Out!

Source

This is the biggest bunch of BS I have heard in a while... Warren is now a dictatorship?

Quote:
Buy American or Get Out?
A Detroit mayor tells his employees what car to drive

This latest round of the discussion was inspired by a decision made by Jim Fouts, the mayor of Warren, Mich., a large Detroit suburb and Michigan's third-largest city, and where a good portion of the residents are (or were) autoworkers.

In mid-August, Fouts told his department heads, which amount to 40 or 50 of the city's more than 700 employees that he "expects" the next car they buy will be an American model. More to the point, he expects them to drive General Motors or Chrysler vehicles, since both companies have various manufacturing or assembly plants in Warren -- not to mention GM's sprawling Tech Center -- and therefore are the city's two highest taxpayers.

Fouts, who drives a 2001 Chrysler Concorde himself, isn't being draconian about it. That is, he hasn't ordered his appointees to run right out and dump their Hondas, Toyotas, Saabs or Audis immediately. "But I strongly suggested that the next car they buy should be an American one, and that I had an equally strong expectation that they will do so," Fouts said. "Legally, since they are 'at-will' employees, I have the right to mandate, and an expectation that they will meet that mandate."

thats funny... what's even funnier is that some american cars that are sold in europe and not in US are pretty decent compared to what is sold back in US... i.e some cadilac models, corvette is nice, and pretty much all of Ford's range is very good in Europe from Kuga, Focus, Mondeo to Ka. If ford sold those in US they'd put up a good fight and would be at least in face of Focus and Mondeo a great alternative to Accord-Civic Corolla-Camry stables.

Last I heard, GM was looking to sell off the Hummer brand, just like Ford dropped the Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

Maybe he should tell GM to move all the Plants in Canada employing 20,000 people back across the border into Michigan. According to GM reports, the plants in Canada produced 785,000 vehicles in 2007 and only sold 400,000 in Canada...where are the other 385,000...thats right...they are imported into the US. What a joke.

Is this particular car only produced in Canada and therefore needs to be exported to the US?

GM is reported to dump Saab soon, ford is also reported to dump volvo in the coming months. this is all just speculation but it would be great for volvo. they plan to bring back the c70R which is a brilliant car that boasted 400+ hp out of a turbo charged v6 engine!

Yeung330xi - the reports are not specific, so I can not comment to why they are imported. My post was just making fun of the buy american mandate by commenting that some of the "American" cars are not manufactured in America. GM has manufacturing in Canada, Mexico, and US to supply the US demand.
