Does tires have an expiration date?

Everyone,

Does any one know that tires have an expiration date? or expires date?

When a spare tires that are not using and seat in a garage. Thanks.

Actually they do. It's on the tire. Check the DOT website. It's important to use tires within a time period. All the info is on the web. Do a Google search.

To find a tire's age, check its long DOT code, found on the side of the tire. At the very end are three numbers which indicate the week and year the tire was made, for example a DOT number ending with 414 means the tire was made the 41st week of the year 1994.

As a rule I would not use any tires more than 5 years old. Often tire shops offer deals and sales on tires that are old.

There is no hard and fast rule on how to mark tires with a born on date. All manufacturers do date tires along with other information (lot, plant location, ect ect). It takes some sleuthing to figure out.

Yes there is an expiration date. i've heard it is ~5yr from date of manufacture.

Tires will dry out, crack etc. no worth it to take the chance. If you have an older car with spare >5yr old, I'd think about getting it replaced

There is absolutely a date on tires. On the Bridgestone run flats its the DKN4805 type number. It's always coded in 4 numeric assignments. 4805 refers to 48th week of 2005. So a new tire would be 3508. 35th week of 2008 or some time in August of '08 manufacture date. If you have a tire that says 5199. Its 51st week of 1999. or too old even if the tread is brand new. Consumer Reports and most manufacturers recommend that a tire past 6 years is too old even if it's "brand New". Retailers will try to sell you the old tires first to get them off inventory.I saw a video where a guy went in and bought a new closeout tire that was 13 years old and looked perfect. The rubber dry rots and the tread separates from the sidewall at high speeds. Make sure you get fresh rubber. It could be life or death...

According to Type Bible, only tires that are manufacured after Year 2000 have a 4 digit date code. A 1999 vintage will have a 3 digital code that ends with a 9, which can also mean it was made in 1989.

A general rule of thumb: Any tire with a 3 digital date code, or a 4 digit date code that ends with a number less than 03, should not be used on a vehicle.

It might be synthetic, but that just means it came from dead dinosaurs, not tree blood. Petroleum is converted into synthetic rubber still breaks down. Just look at anything plastic left out in the sun.

Age, weathering, UV, wear from operation will all cause rubber to get stiffer and more likely to crack and delaminate.

Haha, I saw that a while ago and the first thing I did was run to my garage and check all the dates on my tires!

Yep, absolutely.

Even if unused, the rubber in tires will decay over time due to ozone in the air attacking the compound. Worse yet if left out in the sun and elements with UV radiation and heat and cold cycles...

While tires do not have expiration dates on then, they do have dates of manufacture on them.

Tires degredate very very slowly in storage conditions (out of direct sunlight and the elements, not being heat cycled on a car from daily use, etc..) but once put into use five to seven years (depending on who you believe) is considered to be a safe range of time.

I personally would have no problem installing *unused* tires that are three to five years old, or snow tires that are stored all but four months out of the year.

However, tires that have been on a vehicle and driving for six or seven years have probably lost a lot of their grip and one should consider replacing them. They aren't ticking time bombs like some dramatists might have you believe...
