I just changed my auto transmission oil in my 2007 E91 328 IX wagon. I drained out the old oil and used a hand pump to fill Dextron oil.
Before, I was experiencing a chatter/slipping when it would shift gears, but only within a lower RPM range. Now, that chatter is gone and overall the shifting is smoother, but I feel a little bit of jerkiness when accelerating from a stop. This seem normal? Will the car "learn" this new shifting behavior and smooth it out itself?? The jerkiness isn't dramatic or anything, but just didn't experience it before the transmission oil change. I also think that the oil level was low as not a lot came out, maybe 2 liters and I topped it up until oil drained out the full hole. Before I buttoned it all up I did shift thru the P, R, N, D and topped it off. Thanks !! |

so you just drained/filled the pan?
if so you're many quarts shy of fully changing the fluid, and I would recommend doing the filter if you're at or near 100K miles. the beck arnley kit with the fluid and filter is not big money. |

So there really isn't a way to change just the transmission oil ? The pan and filter must be changed as well for it to be effective?

Did you reset the adaptations in the transmission?

If it's the GM transmission, I don't think you should reset adaptations. I changed my fluid and filter at about 50,000 miles and didn't reset them. It runs very good and shifts improved.

The GM transmission in our E91 had rough upshifts at low speeds. After the fluid and filter was changed at 50,000 miles it was better. Resetting the adaptations made it very smooth.

I guess it depends on age, driving habits and other factors. Mine was shifting fine before the changeout - slight improvement after. I just did it as a preventative maintenance thing.

if you just drain and fill the pan you've only gotten about a third of the fluid out of the system. do it 3 or 4 more times and you'll have mostly clean fluid. I pull the trans cooler lines and use the transmission to pump the pan dry into a graduated container so I know how much to put back in accurately. pull line. pump out 3 quarts. shut off motor. fill pan turn car back on pump out 3 more quarts. continue until fluid coming from the trans cooler line is clean. Last tie I did it was about 12 quarts until I got clean fluid. if you're only doing the pan fluid, bump that number up because you're mixing old/new fluid. so you've got a couple more changes to go. but at 100K miles I would strongly sugest dropping the pan to service the filter and clean all the nasty out of it. |
