335i rattle
hi all I have a e92 335ise its developed a rattle you can hear on start up so whilst it was at the garage getting the oil changed I asked them if they could find the source. they've come back to me and said it's the wastegate actuator(s) which I've then found out is quite a common thing on n54 engines.
I seen that people do the "temp" fix but apparently mine has gone so far that the temp fix ksnt an option so need to replace the actuators. a local independent bmw garage I called have said that to replace them it may be an engine out of the car job?? so£££ lol is this true of can they be replaced with the engine in the car? also is there any garages or anyone any of you can recommend to do this job? in the south of UK Hampshire area. any tips or information much appreciated thanks. |

If you have wastgate rattle it's more than likely that there will be turbine shaft wear
Best options new turbos or have existing re built or buy a pair of used ones & have them rebuilt. When mine needed replacing at 109k I had a rebuild price of £350 + Vat each but decided to go with new Mitsubishi ones. Cost was £1900 supplied & fitted along with a new sump gasket as the sump had been leaking for a while & as it had to be dropped to do the tubs. If you do go down the rebuild route & want a pair of tubs so as your car can still be used whilst they're being rebuilt let me know as my old ones are taking up room in my garage.

thanks for that. kind of hoping I dont have to replace the turbos too! been told that I should be alright just replacing these actuators as the car still runs and revs etc fine plus with the car only on 70k miles I should be lucky. had always contemplated going hybrid turbos if I was to have the car for a while and wanted to start with modifications.
if the car does need to be in the garage for a while whilst the problem is being fixed then isnt a massive worry as dont use the car everyday and cant really go anywhere thanks to this lockdown lol thanks for the reply |

No worries, enjoy the 35i they're a great car.
Mine still makes me smile after having done nearly 70'000 miles in it. No real need for hybrids, stock can handle around 400/420bhp. Spend the money on brakes, suspension, chargepipe, intercooler, engine & gearbox map (If it's an auto). That'll get you 360/380bhp, maybe a little more with new oem tubs, mine was surprisingly quicker when I replaced them. You could also add meth & upgraded fuel pump then you're getting to about all the stock tubs will take. Word of caution though, don't blow all your money on mods as at 70k it's going to need valve cover, oil filter housing & sump gaskets within the next 20k, if it doesn't already. New coils if you're increasing the power. Water pumps last around 40k, I'm on my third, hpfp if it hasn't already been replaced & a lot of cars have had injectors replaced (some more than once) although my 35i is still on its original injectors at nearly 120k, I think that could be because I only use Shell V Power. Anyways enjoy the 35i & post some pics up.

you are right the 335 is a good car had it about nearly 18 months now. the whole thing with the hybrids was only ever an idea doubt it would have ever happened. had always intended to do the little mods I.e exhaust, remap (no need for gearbox remap as shes manual) etc. however even standard still fairly quick.
however have been thinking about it and once this issue is sorted probably but the car up for sale. not becuase this has happened I just fancy a change. |
