Widespread cellular network issues?
My phone can call out, but the person on the other end can't hear me. I have Sprint, but there are social media posts reporting the same issue across all of networks. I called the wife and my three boys, and none of them can hear me whatsoever!
Are you guys having the same issues?

Two days ago a coworker on Tmobile was having issues being unable to make calls. Texting and internet worked fine. No one in his family could make calls. My kids are on AT&T and were having slow internet connections the last two days but can make calls and text. I'm on FirstNet and haven't had any issues. Just noticed I'm at 106gb this month, guess I better ease up. lol

Interesting to see what the root cause is where T Mobiles issue spilled over to the other carriers. I expected Sprint to be affected as they're in process of merging but the other carriers? I don't know much about how cell providers network together. But I have to assume it's similar to ISPs where they share route information with BGP.

Reading Now_Rudi 's article link, there is a bit more clarity on what happened. One of the circuits T-Mobile uses to send data traffic over had a failure. The way things were supposed to work is what I referenced above. ISPs connected over WAN circuits and the Internet backbone use a routing protocol called BGP (Border Gateway Protocol). BGP allows exchanges of route tables which tells routers at the ISPs how to direct traffic to its intended destination. Among the information exchanged by BGP is performance metrics and other data where the router can make an intelligent decision on where to send network traffic. With the situation we're talking about here, that failed leased fiber should have been dealt with easily if everything was configured and working correctly as the router connected to that fiber would have distributed the network traffic appropriately to other network paths. So either something was missed by T-Mobile's engineers or someone F'd up and misconfigured their router(s). |
