Purchasing car from manufacturer

I was wondering if there was anyway I could purchase a car directly from a manufacturer rather than a dealer. I know one person that purchased a volvo like that years ago, she just wrote a check of how much ever the car was worth and they shipped it to her... I lost contact with that person so I cant ask her how she did it, so I have come to you to help me out.... any feedback is appreciated...

I believe it is only through diplomatic sales can you purchase direct from the manufacturer (available also with non-us specs and options such as RHD). I know BMW, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz has a program in place. Diplomats posted to missions here in DC order via diplomatic sales all the time...

If MFG take a direct deal who would go to dealer and make the purchase from them ? Why even bother to set up dealer network ?

I dont know. It sounded too good to be true, but u never know. I mean there might just be a loophole in the system. I was thinking if u paid for the car upfront in cash, they might accept a deal...

The thing is, BMW NA runs the show here...I would think you could bring one back as a personal import (you need to check but I think you need to have lived in europe or something like that) but keep in mind, there might be warranty/maintenance issues...

Wrt to your friend and volvo, I believe quite some years ago, they had a Tourist Delivery Program...basically a precursor to today's Euro Delivery programs as offered by BMW, MB, Volvo and Porsche...
