pretty sure I remember changing the pump and thermostat without removing the fan on my state-side 35d (did need to remove egr cooler, though).

I did that after I realized it was a metal gasket! Lots of blood. Also good idea to replace bolts and TORQUE to spec. I learned the hard way and had to rip it apart again, it doesn't seem real tight but any tighter it'll leak.
