hi,

just bought a used 2011 328XI that was built June 2010. This is the first time owning a BMW and learning lots here.

I went on the BMW software update website
https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html
and downloaded a new BIN file for my idrive with update on bluetooth. I put it in a a fat32 formatted USB stick and put it in the car. In my idrive, I do not have a software update option. I was reading that to update via USB drive, my car has to be built after May 2010?

How do I do this update? i also ordered an USB cable for this car as I'm looking to do some coding. can i update what that?

The update is only for BMW with the combox. If you can stream BT music you have a combox. If you only have BT phone, that update does not work on your car. Below is a picture of a combox in the trunk of an E90.

That's too bad. BMW should let men download the firmware... can I update via a cable? I want to see if I can make the USB port work with my iPhone X

Do you have a combox? If so, the update above is only for Bluetooth connectivity. Also, the USB port does not have enough amps to charge a modern phone. There is no way to do this update with the obd cable.

You should look into the carplay boxes. It will do what you want.
