RX-8 R3

Has anyone here test driven a R3? I am intrigued by this car as I have heard many good things about the RX-8's handling and this model must be the best yet.

Motor Trend discusses it alongside a bunch of other cars scrutinizing their handling. It's an amazing article. I suggest you go pick up an issue.

From what I can remember they tested a 911 Turbo, JCW Mini, RX8 (with R3 pkg), Viper ACS, R8, M3, Cobalt SS, and a GTR. The R8 won.

yeah I read the article where it placed third in the best handling car in America. Very impressive. just wanted to get some feedback from people who may own one/ test driven one. Are they safe?

The R3 includes the rear spoiler, 19-inch forged aluminum wheels, side sills and fog lamps. The stock seats are swapped out for Recaros and Bilstein was tapped by Mazda to provide the shocks. Most of the R3 items are cosmetic in nature.

Even before the R3, I can attest to the RX-8 being an incredibly handling car, almost on rails. The car is routinely criticized for being a bit underpowered, sucking gas and being quirky for using oil, all of these issues stemming from the rotary powerplant. Someone else said it best, the RX-8 rotary has the power of a six cylinder, the torque of a four cylinder and the gas mileage of a V-8. Pretty accurate indeed.

If you can live with these quirks the car is a blast to drive on the street or track or autocross. It has a great driver feel and the steering and handling are among the best of anything sold in the US. Perfect balance 50/50 means very high limits in cornering, very agile and very tossable.

It is also very safe, lots of airbags and has done very well in crash tests.

I had a blast with mine for 4 years.

We're talking about a Mazda, not the Audi.

- Original headlights were perfect. These dont actually look bad but I dont know if I like them yet. Hmm...
Overall, I cant wait to see official pics. It shouldnt be too bad, maybe even tasteful, but I dont know if it'll be able to top the 350Z design.
The new 3.7 engine from the G37 Coupe should be interesting though! Nissan say they are aiming at the Cayman and obviously TT and next Z4. If it drives great I'd take it over all of them. In terms of design it's already ahead of the Cayman and TT. Though this new TT-R is looking hot and we aint really seen the new Z4 yet!

This car is going to be a lot more performance oriented that the last 350Z. Weighing close to 3,000lbs and having 330hp, it's going to give a lot of car problems. Nissan stated that the benchmark for this car is the Porsche Cayman. Nissan's GTR destroyed its benchmark of the 911 Turbo so I expect the same with this car. Just as long as it's not a M3 beater, I will be ok with it and if it is, that just means BMW is going to have to make an even better M3 next time. Competition is a good thing.

cant wait for this to come out. this is more competition for the Z4 than 335i as the Z4 and 350Z are true(er) sports cars. this 370Z should be even better. it looks the part, those fender flares are hiding much wider track than the 350Z.
