n54 engine swap thi weekend, ECU and MHD question

Howdy, I'm swapping my 207k mile N54 engine with a 70k mile N54 this weekend.

I'm debating whether I should use the ECU from the other engine, as its a complete engine ready to install.

My current engine/ECU are running MHD stage 2+, does anyone know if I will have to purchase the MHD software again for the new engine, if I use that ECU?

Or would I just need to code my cars VIN to the new ECU?

Thanks!

I'm currently planning to keep my existing DME/ECU in there.
Since the new engine is LCI n54 and mine is pre-LCI, just curious if anyone has run into problems with electronics on an engine swap.
Thanks!

If you have MSD80 and donor MSD81 they use the MSD81. Once properly coded it with correct VIN will allow for MHD flash without running into licensing issues.

Issues? I’m sure a lot of people have experienced issues due to various reasons. Pinched wires. Broken connectors.

Don't forget to code the DME with the new injector data. I'd also reset the adaptations

I thought MHD reads other VIN that can't be changed to do license checks and not the one within the flash that most people change.

Current MHD software will look to the CAS if the VIN present in the DME doesn't match the one registered to the software. They made this change to accommodate the growing number of folks who've had to replace their DMEs. In addition, you can write a new VIN to the DME as many times as you wish and MHD won't care - it reads the DME VIN only from the first entry in the UIF which was done at the factory and cannot be changed with BMW standard tools.

OP: don't forget that you cannot simply install the DME that comes with your replacement engine, unless it comes with a matching CAS and a key. You'll have to send the new DME along with your current CAS and a key to someone who has the appropriate software and skills to read the SK/ISN from the new DME and write it to the CAS. BMW standard tools cannot do this. So, it's an argument for leaving things the way they are.

I think the CAS module would need to be coded to the new DME along with the keys.
