Tension Struts? (Video)
I'm trying to diagnose a very slight front end clunk over bumps on my 09 328i xDrive.
So far I've replaced the following just to refresh things anyway: -New Bilstein front struts -New Lemforder front strut mounts -New Lemforder sway bar end links -New OEM sway bar bushings Everything above is tight and correctly torqued. Suspension and steering feels good and tight. Ball joints all look good, only thing I'm not sure on is the front tension struts. I attached videos of the play in both of them, they have a little but I'm not sure if it's enough to warrant replacing or not. The tension strut bushings themselves don't appear to be leaking or have any cracks. Left Side: Right Side: Any help would be appreciated! Thanks |

IIRC, those thrust bushings aren't meant to turn like that under load while on the road, so all of the OEM style thrust bushings will have play when you twist them like that. Try using a pry-bar to push them in and out from the subframe rather than twisting them the way you did in your videos.
Regardless, those are filled with some type of magic fluid and even if they 'look' to not have any cracks in them at first, they could have leaked the fluid, deeming them essentially useless. I suggest getting Poly bushings as those OEM style hydrofilled trust bushings fail so fast and so hard on these cars that it's annoying. |
