My diy dual oil cooler setup

I track my car a few times a year. HPDE format with 20-30 minute lapping sessions. My oil temps would get up to 290°F some times. I installed a CSF radiator which helped. I wanted more cooling capacity, and I love messing with things so I made my own setup. I looked at the commercially available systems and a few other diy setups while designing my own system. I did my whole setup without removing the front bumper.

I removed the drivers side wheel well liner to make a template from cardboard. I also removed my brake ducts to make this work.

I took off the passenger side wheel well liner and removed the factory oil cooler. I then reversed the cardboard design and checked that a mirrored piece would fit the opposite site. It did.

Next I cut aluminum and began fabricating.

I bought a pair of Mishimoto 25 row oil coolers off eBay. Scratch and dent boxes, but the parts inside the boxes were brand new and un-touched. I also bought a bunch of chinese fittings and higher temp rated oil hose.

I left the factory oil thermostat and housing in place and functioning. I routed the coolers in series so the oil leave the engine, goes through one cooler and then the second cooler, and then returns to the engine.

I cut and made my own louvered cover plates for the two oil coolers to protect them from debris.

Awesome fab work! What kind of temps do you run now?

On the street it gets to 230, 240 on super hot days and messing around. On track it stays at or below 260°F.

How'd you do the connection to the oil thermostat housing? Do you run a thermostat?

Would it be possible to do a setup like this with one cooler mounted behind the kidneys? I have the secondary radiator in the driver's fender area which I think is 335is specific. Even with the BMS oil cooler valve I hit over 270* on the track so I'm looking to upgrade

I would have though that with those aftermarket coolers...the temps would be much lower.

I have NO cooler....and on the street I'm around 225-230. Never have tracked the car though......so I don't know how high that would get the temps.

Awesome fab work!!!👍

Yes, I run the stock thermostat in the stock housing. There are a lot of places to buy an 'Oil cooler adapter'.

I think Misfit Racing sells an oil cooler setup to put them behind the kidneys.

The oil temps are still thermostat controlled, so additional coolers won't necessarily lower normal use temperatures. What they will do is keep the oil from overheating when the car is pushed, like on a track.

And I still say yours is an anomaly. Are you sure it's reading right?

I've double checked it with MHD......

Are you guys running the MHD sport.cooling option to lower your coolant temps? I'm sure that helps with oil temps too....

I tried turning it on a few days ago...the fan kicked on to blast off speed right after and it freaked me out and I was in a hurry to get somewhere so I turned it off. Will try again when I don't have anywhere to be to make sure all is ok.

Ah....you must have went to the "live" menu and turned the "max cool mode" on. That's something completely different.....that's for when you want manually turn the fan on to max......not what I'm talking about.

In the MHD tune options menu (same menu that burble settings are in) there is a "coolant target" slider that can be set to stock, sport, or race......put it on sport (not race). That will change the coolant temp setpoints. I think it drops them around 10 degrees or so.

It's not weird. I had no oil cooler, that's what mine was just driving around.

It's still cooled by coolant, just like every other oem. It just has zero headroom once pushed.

But doesn't MHD get its data from the DME and the same sensor as the gauge? If the sensor is reading low, so will the gauge and MHD. Not trying to say you have a problem, just that it is the lowest I've read about, especially without a cooler. Maybe just consider yourself lucky.

Gotcha. I'm not tuned, so I don't have experience with that side of what the options are. If it drops 10 degrees, that starts to explain why yours are significantly lower, but it does still seem to be lower than others without a cooler.

EDIT: Weird how it quoted this.
