Looks okay. Maybe a little too many horizontal chrome lines on the front end. Shame about the radar sensor as it totally ruins the front grille.

I find the exterior of this car hilariously generic. If I saw it coming from the other way, I wouldn't think much of it, and I don't think this car will age very well.

I think its a great design inside and out, especially in comparison to its closest competitors ie 7-series and A8. It makes the 7-series looks grotesque and overdone, and the A8 just looks boring. I also like how they kept the grille a reasonable size.

Still clearly head and shoulders above the pack.

I have to agree with previous posters, I do like the design. But then again I also really like the new A-class design which starts to trickle down (or up?) into the other models. I can see how other's think it's too generic since it basically looks like an A-class sedan with some extra wheelbase. Also wtf those headlights are real ugly lol. At least they get that cool new features Audi had first.

But the interior, woooow that's gorgeous. The wood trim looks phenomenal and the leather stitching looks just right. On the Individual leather of the 7 series I think it's a bit too much, in the mercedes though.... But i can imagine that being a $16k designo package just like the $10k Individual on the BMW. Would'be loved if they kept the touchpad/rotary controller just like the A-Class or BMW, but they are doing a full Audi here. On the A7/A8 the infotainment is TERRIBLE. You have to actively look away from the road, refocus on the screen tap and then look back again, which means you have your eyes off the road for like 5-10 seconds. I don't like the direction they are going and BMW seems to join the trend if you look at e.g. the 2er active tourer spy shots.

Overall still a very good car, will probably stay at the top of the luxury segment as expected.

Still a interior downgrade from the W222.

CLS from the back, E-class up front. Android tablets, screens and gloss black crap everywhere. No physical buttons made out of metal or any kind of analogue instruments that will look good in a ten, twenty or thirty years' time.

In this decade, luxury only means cramming as much tech into a car as possible. Looks and works great for a few years, but who cares about longevity down the road when the car gets dumped after three years and replaced by a facelifted model with a newer infotainment system.

I like the look of the A Class sedan as well, but I don't think this translates into the jumbo sized version of it. I like the refreshed E Class as well, so it's not just the overall style MB is going with, it's this in particular. To me it looks like the size of the front and rear lights are just too small for it's body size, whereas it fits nicely on all of the other smaller models.

When has that ever not been an S-Class trademark?

W140
W220
W221
W222

Were all crammed to the gills with as much tech as possible for the time, even if upkeep down the road would be difficult.

Good point.

But the touch interface replacing physical buttons and stuff, often made out of metal in the S, are still a stupid idea. That's where modern technology is a step backwards. What was wrong with the metal buttons for the memory seats or mirror adjustment? They were probably a bit too expensive to make, I guess.

Golf 8 has got rid of even the light switch for a touch interface. hashtag progress.

Very true, MB spent $1B in development on W140 and let the engineers have a field day and was heavily criticized for being over engineered.

As for the W220, this recent article tells all you need to know about it, and how the tech brought a huge downside to ownership of the car. https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...-w220-s-class/

The only thing I'm going to nitpick are the head and taillights. Not exactly the biggest fan of the design. Overall S > 7

All this tech always ages like an avocado. Even cars from just ten years ago, which look fantastic, are now crippled by slow, outdated infotainment systems.

Also found this a bit funny. One of the lead designers took a subtle shot at the 7er when C/D talked about the grill.

Quote:
The W223 generation's grille is only slightly larger vertically compared to the previous generation, with, of course, the Mercedes-Benz hood ornament directly overhead. "The Mercedes grille is so strong that we don't need to overdo it," Enns says when asked about its competitors' grilles. "We don’t have to tweak it in a way that becomes ridiculous."

Ok you must seriously be blind then... I get maybe the comparison to Genesis because they've been stealing German design cues but an Accord???
