Coolant Bleed Procedure - what am I doing wrong..?

OK, tried to bleed coolant system (electric water pump):
  • Switch on ignition (don't start)
  • Temp to max
  • Fan to min
  • Trottle pedal to floor for 10secs.

Nothing happens. After 10-15 secs the dash display simply shuts off. Pump doesn't start.

Any ideas?

TIS says to put headlights to on so that the car doesn't turn off. Maybe try that?

When I did mine I set my headlights to off, otherwise the same steps as OP.

OP, are you sure you're turning the ignition on? You need to press the start button twice without pressing the brake(clutch if you're MT). Pressing it once puts the car in accessory mode. Pressing twice turns ignition on.

Still a little odd that the dash lights would just turn off. Might be having some other issue there.

Spot on Emilime75. Hadn't pressed the start button enough times. Doh! Thanks everyone.

Don't forget to have a battery charger connected while doing the procedure.

Hmmm. Didn't do that. My battery's pretty strong. Any particular reason?

Might be OK without it if the battery is in great shape...it's just a highly recommended thing to do anytime you'll have the ignition on for a while as these cars are heavy on the electrical side and tend to drain it quickly, often causing other issues. Running the water pump puts an additional load on it.

It's also best to disconnect it at the ground terminal when working on the car, especially if you have to unplug anything electrical. Just a safety/best practice thing to keep the various modules in the car as happy as they can be.

Could drain the battery and leave you flat.
