Wheel/Tire fitment - 335xi - need better cushion

I have a 2007 e90 335xi - manual. Here in the north east pot holes are plentiful and they eat up wheels, some eat up cars!!!

I am looking for wheels /tires that increase the sidewall height.
I currently have 255/35/R18 and 255/40/R18. This seems inadequate given the road conditions and bent rims and I am wondering if I can go 17" to get increased height OR keep the wheels and get higher side walls.

How high can I go? Any suggestions appreciated
