XHP support says i altered the bootloader but to my knowledge the car was stock when I purchased is 6 months ago.

Hi,

it’s the exact same issue you are facing with xHP!

ECUPM fails, because it seems you have an altered bootloader on your TCU. I would just exchange your Mechatronic……seems there is just no way to flash it.

Regards

Clemens
What can i try next?

He's probably correct. You've exhausted the easy options.

What would cause this? Is the Mechatronic? The entire transmission? The transmission seems to work fine. I drive it daily. Forgive me I'm trying to wrap my head as to what the underlying issue is.

How are you flashing with winkfp? Prog zb update or choosing a manual zb file? Send a photo of your UIF and identification. Inpa > e90 > functional jobs > F3 for UIF and f2 for identification.

I know but on the thread that he linked he explained that he tried to flash with winkfp per xhp's instructions to remedy the problem.

Yes winkfb after failing with the xhp app. Not sure what you mean by the programing question. I did it in comfort mode in winkfp..

UIF and ID attached.

The VIN reported in the UIF begins with "NL" my VIN tags begin with "WB". Are these supposed to be the same?

The same error was in the logs for the Android XHP flashtool app. I believe i am set up correctly in winkfp.

Yes winkfb after failing with the xhp app. Not sure what you mean by the programing question. I did it in comfort mode in winkfp..

UIF and ID attached.
In comfort mode you can either manually select the software file to flash or have it automatically detect the newest zb number (software file) to flash. Post a picture of your winkfp configuration.

I'd try this:

F1 comfort mode
F2 gke215 and find 7601492, press ok
F4 enter vin
F8 done
F3 flash/program

This is just re writing the stock file that your car already has. It's possible winkfp is choosing an incorrect file to update causing the error, it's rare but I've seen it happen with clusters. Worth a shot. Shouldn't be any reason you can't flash the transmission with winkfp.

I agree something is strange with the vehicle.

These lines are the key to the problem:
Code:
[23:07:29.214] [2020-09-22] [<WinKFP Tool] 2089 PABD/CABD 06FLASH Programmieren 2538
[23:07:29.214] [2020-09-22] [<WinKFP Tool] switching programming mode failed 10FLASH, DIAGNOSE_MODE (ECUPM): ERROR_ECU_SECURITY_ACCESS_DENIED__SECURITY_ACCESS_REQUESTED

[23:07:36.562] [2020-09-22] [<WinKFP Tool] 2081 PABD/CABD 06FLASH Programmieren 2660
[23:07:36.562] [2020-09-22] [<WinKFP Tool] Authentification failed 10FLASH, AUTHENTISIERUNG_START ( SG-Schluessel ...): ERROR_AUTHENTICATION
During the flash process the programming station has to authenticate. The EGS will send a key to the programming station and the station then has to pass that key through a cipher and then returns the key. If it matches what the EGS is expecting the access is granted but in your case this is failing.

Since both WinKFP and xHP have the same cipher for that key they both get exactly the same failure response. So either the EGS has non standard boot sector code or there's some very wacky comms issues causing bad data but my feeling is that the latter explanation would cause problems elsewhere and not just at that one stage.

Just looking at the screenshots you posted it looks like that car has been updated at some point but the EGS has remained on its original firmware. The only other modules that have old dates are ones which probably have no updates available. The EGS should be much later than that.

I will try to flash like this, I think i used a different file from 7601492 and I believe I chose something for Update ECU as well.

What would be the remedy? Update EGS? If so what would be the process?

Possibly, you need to update the EGS, perhaps at a dealer. It could be that BMW has changed the keys since the original program, although I have never heard of that or seen a module where that occured. You can also get those errors when the signal between the cable and module is not solid, it doesn't necessarily mean the key doesn't match.

However, I find it far more likely there is a cable or communication issue than a modified boot sector. I've come across it dozens of times. Almost every time there's a problem flashing (especially with WinkFP), it is an issue with the cable or configuration, it's pretty much never the file or the module. Only once have I ever come across a DME that somehow wouldn't flash, but I think it was corrupted because of a cable issue. I patched it on a bench using BDM, and then was able to flash it normally.

I'd have a look at that wireless connection, which seems a likely culprit. Just connecting the cable directly is always safer.

EGS cant be updated with WinKFP? Ive been using a wired cable for the WinkFP flash with this cable. Ive also flashed the DME with MHD and done some coding using it as well, but I know the TCU is more finicky. Should i get another cable? What about a ICOM cable? CAn you give me any recommendations on what to try next?

Post a photo of your winkfp configuration. You can flash EGS with kdcan cable, no need for icom.

That looks like a sketchy cable but you said it works with the DME. The DME and TCU are very similar in their programming routine.

CAn you give me any recommendations on what to try next?
yeah, I'm not sure that cable will work either. If it has the firmware update like the BG cable, maybe, but if it doesn't, I wouldn't even try. Generic cables can work OK for DME flashing, except for MSS60/65, but they can write garbage to modules like the EGS, CCC/CIC, etc. The BG cable works as well as an ICOM, but if you have access to an ICOM, that should work too. WinKFP can be used to flash the EGS with either a BG cable or an ICOM.
