SZL Steering Sensor gone bad after dead battery?
About a month ago, the battery in my 2007 E90 died and I didn't notice for a few days since I was driving other cars. After replacing the battery, clearing all the codes, and registering the new battery in ISTA-D, I'm still have an issues with the DSC/ABS failure. (Note, I have not replaced anything on the car besides the battery, the DSC and SZL units are original.)
Here are the codes from ISTA-D: I've confirmed the steering angle sensor is sending bad data to the DSC unit via the diagnostics in IMPA: I followed the instructions here to try and recode and recalibrate my steering angle sensor, but to no avail: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showt...1490592&page=2 When I read the coding of the SZL from Tool32, it has the correct VIN assigned: ISTA-D refuses to calibrate the sensor. It gives an error saying "Coding of DSC unit incorrect", but I was under the impression that running this diagnostic is what was supposed to code the DSC? Is there some other coding procedure I need to do to the DSC unit itself to make it re-register the SZL in the car? I can also run the calibration tool inside Tool32, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Does this mean for sure that the SZL unit is bricked? How is it possible that a dead battery caused the module to fail? That just doesn't make any sense to me. Last edited by citizen_insane; 10-03-2020 at 06:16 PM.. |

Follow the steps below, this will remedy the steering angle sensor.
Load tool32 and open dsc_87.prg or whatever prg you dsc is Run lenkwinkel_dsc_abgleichen Close out of tool32 and load ncs expert Code dsc module Exit ncs expert and open ista. In ista go to service functions > chassis > steering angle sensor and perform steering angle sensor adjustment. After that clear codes. |

Edit: I reran everything suggested. I followed the DSC coding instructions here http://blog.obdii365.com/2015/09/11/...s-expert-inpa/, but I'm still getting the same errors in ISTA-D afterword. NCSexpert says that it's coding the module, but it's hard to tell since there's not really any feedback. I'm doubtful that the DSC is actually getting recoded because ISTA-D still reports an issue with the steering angle sensor serial number. Last edited by citizen_insane; 10-04-2020 at 01:13 PM.. |

I unhooked the battery for 15 min to clear everything and then tried again from the beginning:

So just to be sure, have you checked the left rear wheel speed sensor and its connections? It does happen.
Also, I find that resetting SAS is sometimes better done with a professional level, generic diagnostic tool like a Snap-on or Autel. If you know a garage or someone might be a good thing to start with. |
