Sputtering subwoofers

I've done a few searches for blown subs but nothing quite like the situation I am recently dealing with...

About 2 weeks ago I noticed that my OEM subs under the front seats would sputter, or not be on at all, and then come back on like nothing ever happened. Now they sputter all the time and won't come back to full so it sounds like garbage and blown... Is this something as simple as a loose connection? Or is this a bigger issue? Does anyone know the best way to access the sub to see if there is a wire loose etc? It's a 2006 300xi and it goes back in a few months but this is really pissing me off!!

The subs are stereo. (If you are still using the factory system or a replacement system using 2 channels to drive them)

The chance of both of them going bad in exactly the same way at exactly the same time is small. Your amp or head unit may be the problem.

Another possibility in the connect to the factory amp if you have one or into the head unit. I had a very similar problem in my e36 and pulling and re-seating the connector into the amp temporarily fixed it.

As for taking out the seat, search this forum for sub replacement and you'll find it. The short story is you need a #50 Torx driver - and don't disconnect the air bag sensor wire unless you want to go to the dealer for a reset. Be gentle with it.

Although, The chances of finding 2 loose connections on each of the 2 subs is small.
