P0442 Evap Leak, smoke test?
Alright all, I have a P0442 code as well. Inspected the hose that commonly rubs against the ac hose, no issues there. I plan to smoke test but trying to figure out where to put my smoke hos I unplugged the hose from the purge valve connection. Do I put my hose here to test for leaks upstream (fuel tank, gas cap, Dmtl pump, charcoal canister)? If I find nothing, I assume I need to pull the purge valve hose off and test it using air and 12v source to open the valve?
And yes, I've already changed the gas cap...no issues there. Thanks in advanced. |

Wow I'm surprised now replies! Forums must be not used as much compared in the years past.
Anyway, if you are looking for an evap leak, smoke that hose that pulled off under the throttle body. Found my leak, a freakin mouse made a nest above my wheel well liner and chewed the wiring and a hole through my fuel breather hose. I am not trying to replace this hose. Now I'm looking for patch options. The hose is some type of plastic, any recos on patching the hole?? Last edited by srohang1; 11-06-2020 at 10:41 PM.. Reason: Adding photo |

The forums are still good. None of the experts responded because they were all busy responding to the "muffler delete" and burble tune questions.
But seriously, thanks for the update. I had the same code recently and mine turned out to be that hose under the throttle body. I've done TWO hose repairs with self-sealing silicone tape and they held up perfectly, highly recommended if you can't get a new hose right away. From what I understand that hose of yours that is leaking is the fuel tank vent hose and usually rubs away near the hole where it enters the wheel well. You usually need to drop the tank to replace it, but there are a few posts here where people have used a hole saw to drill a hole inside the car to allow access to the connector on the tank. |

Thanks for the reply!
I did see that diy post about changing the hose, very involved!! If I have to do it, I'll be drilling holes 😉 I ended up jb welding the hole and per your reco I also applied self sealing silicone tape. I put everything back together and started up, no gas cap light! Only time will tell! If I don't post back, consider this fixed. While I was in there I also placed an extra conduit over the part of the breather hose that touches the body (goes to the fuel tank), hopefully preventing any future rubbing. There was no issues, but it's a preventative measure. Last edited by srohang1; 11-08-2020 at 08:53 PM.. Reason: Adding photo |

My car is throwing the P0442 code. I have changed out the gas cap and DMTL. While removing the old DMTL, the decayed remains of two mouse-looking creatures fell out. What did you use to do your smoke test? Thanks!

This looks like passenger side rear. The black plastic pipe is the fuel filler neck. I'm chasing a small EVAP leak myself, so far without success (with a DIY mineral-oil-solder-iron smoke machine).

Checked behind the passenger rear wheel well liner and found a mouse nest and chewed on breather hose, exactly the same as srohang1 . At least my mouse didn't chew the wire, but limited himself to the hose. This is on top of the mouse nest under the engine cover, where the mouse nibbled on the coils a bit (the shop that did the PPI said it didn't go through the insulation, and were gracious enough to spray some liquid electric tape there; I since replaced the spark plugs as preventive maintatinace and have no issues).
I patched the breather hose with hot melt glue and electric tape, hopefully this will resolve my issue for good. |
