2011 BMW 335d What to expect
Hi all, I purchased a like new 2011 335d a few years ago. It was a one owner and had 32k miles on it when I bought it and had all service records. Everything was and still is original aside from the tires. It is on its original brakes as well. Always has had bmw 0w-30 diesel spec oil and bmw filter. The car is original and hasn’t been deleted. Mostly highway miles. I do intend to delete it at some point but I do not drive the car very often so miles don’t go up quickly. It has 57k miles now. My question is what should I be on the look out for in the future or what are some tips for mechanical care with the car. I plan to keep this car going for many years to come basically as my road trip car. Deleting and tuning is on the list but I am just not there yet. I drive it pretty hard on accelerations, not just jamming the peddle and then letting off but a good amount of throttle ~3000rpms on most take offs, if the road is open I’ll let it open up. When I drive it it’s mostly highway and interstate and I don’t do less than 90mph as long as driving conditions and traffic permit of course. The car has no codes and no issues known. Just had it scanned and inspected for its routine checkup a few weeks ago. Thank you for any input you may have!

Sounds like you have a nice low mile, all stock, rare find. Lots of advice on this board on this subject. Use a decent low ash oil, replace fuel filter on schedule, use quality diesel and keep an eye on the harmonic balancer. Carbon build up is common and requires walnut blasting. Suggest getting code scanner like Carly to monitor health when issues pop up. Consider replacing the trans fluid well before 100k. For many, when the egr cooler fouls the deletes begin. My 2 cents. Enjoy the ride!

I think ZF recommend gearbox oil changes every 60k, despite BMW claiming its lifetime.
Mine drove a lot smoother after doing it at 100k - so doing it at ZF's recommended milage can't hurt. |

That is definitely on the list to do. What is the best oil for the transmission?

The ZF recommended interval is every 50-75k miles depending on usage conditions and they always recommend ZF LG6 fluid and parts.
Many people have used other oils as LG6 is expensive and I haven't heard of any fluid related failures but it is definitely possible that it is a contributing factor. Oils that claim ZF 6HP compatibility (Shell M-1375.4) include: Rowe ATF 9006 Pentosin ATF-1 LiquiMoly Top Tec 1800 Redline D6 ATF Ford Mercon SP (Used in Ford's 6HP) Febi 34608 I have personally used Redline D6 and Febi fluids with no noticeable negative effects (doesn't mean there are none), if you have any reservations just get ZF LG6 as you will probably only change it once. Someone on the Honda boards tested LG6 and got the following results: ZF Lifeguard 6 Boron 140 Silicon 2 Sodium 4 Calcium 639 Magnesium 0 Phosphorus 400 Zinc 5 Viscosity@100C(cSt) 5.5 |
