So this is what BMW Engineering is up to. In spite of R&T, C&D and MT mags all saying that BMW has lost it's place as a driver's car. This is lipstick on a pig. Gimmicks for gimmicks sake.

Unfortunately, this trend is not exclusive to just BMW, but is instead implemented by most, if not all manufacturers.

GINA was not a gimmick. It was an exploration of design and materials. The goal was to increase aerodynamics and decrease weight. Removing body panels and substituting for a very high strength polyurethane material could reduce weight by over 500...maybe even 1000 pounds, depending on the car.

I'm guessing the research needed to produce a compliant covering that could withstand the elements and tearing would be quite significant and there is no telling if there would be a market for it and if it would pass various regulations.

The new oversized and non-congruent grills are the real gimmicks.

except now they are wanting to do it on body panels with a flexible paint.

Sweet. I can have DRS on my daily driver. I'm in.

Side note: yet another example of Chris Bangle being way ahead of his time.

Perhaps BMW can apply it to the grills, so that we can make them smaller?
