Wastegate rattling due to tube leaking??

About a month ago, I had some wastegate rattling, so I took it to BMW to get it fixed... they did their quick-fix first, by reprogramming the car. The noise went away for about 2 weeks, and then came back worse. I brought the car in to BMW again this past week, and they replaced the wastegate actuators. But when I came to pick it up this morning, the rattling was even worse than when I had brought it in! I told them to look at it again, and now they are telling me that there was a pinched hose going to one of the turbos that was pinched and leaking. They are ordering a new hose now and say that it'll be replaced next week and the rattling should go away...

My question is... has anyone heard of a "pinched" or "leaking hose" from the turbos causing the wastegate to rattle (or a sound JUST like it?)?? I'm skeptical of this hypothesis.

Here is a video of the sound my car is making... note that the sound is much louder and persistent now, after the wastegate actuators were replaced:

Let them do what they have to do but at the end of the day, it should not make any noise. Have them put you in a loaner and let them do what they have to do. If it does not solve the noise, make it clear that this is the 3rd time you have brought the car in for this noise and it has not been repaired correctly. I took my car in, had the actuators replaced, car still made noise, had the SA and shop foreman hear it and they took it in and kept it until they repaired it correctly which meant replacing the turbos.

I haven't heard of this hapening but I can totaly see it hapening.
think of it this way.

There is a tube going from the solenoid to the actuator that pulls the wastegate closed.
The sloenoid sends a vacuum signal (if you want to call it that) over to the actuator.
The vacuum sucks the actuator rod into the actuator, which pulls the wastegate closed.

If the tube is pinched or leaking then the actuator cannot pull the wastegate closed enough.

It's just like this:
Imagine that you are an Oreck Salesman and you want to show off how strong the vacuum is by sucking up a bowling ball and lifting it in the air.
So, you turn on the vacuum, suck the bolwing ball and lift the vacuum end but the bowling ball doesn't come with it.
You look over at the hose and the hose is crimped.
You uncrimp it and it works.

Same idea.

It's a lot like you have to take a leak, but have a crimp in your noodle. You uncrimp it and it works. Same idea.

Thanks for your help, TMR... They actually put me in a 535i for all the trouble, which was nice. Anyone have a PROcede lying around they wanna lend me? ;-) juuust kidding...

ok ok I get it... I can see how it's possible but... I don't see how that can happen spontaneously?? I sure haven't done any work under the hood... I don't see how a line can all of a sudden crimp/leak when it's not being messed with... my SA said the tube shakes around as you drive... buuut... I mean, I'm not driving in an earthquake... doesn't make sense to me...

dude thats definitely the infamous rattle, do Mr. 5's fix and if its not gone... then take it BMW but honestly, Mr. 5's fix should work It did on mine!

Well, I don't really have a lift, so it would be very tough to get under the car in the first place...

on top of that, if BMW is right, the problem is the leaking tubing to the solenoid... not the actuator rod (the actuator was just replaced yesterday)... so Mr. 5's fix probably wouldn't fix this problem...

You don't need a lift.
Everything can be done from the engine bay.
Actually, if you lifted the car then it would be harder to do.

But, I agree. Let BMW try to fix it by replacing the tube.
If it's not fixed after the tube gets replaced then you have other alternatives.
My feeling is that the time that I lose by taking my car into BMW over and over and trusting them to do their job is much worse than when I can take care of it myself.
Then again, I'm lucky to be able to do such a thing.

That's true... this being the 3rd time I've left the car with them for the same problem has wasted a lot of time... hopefully this is the last time...

Didn't know you could do all of that in the engine bay... maybe I'll give it a shot once I get my car back (if it's STILL not fixed... )
