All-season or Winter tires in Portland, OR?

Just found out I'm moving to Portland in about a month. Rotational program with the job, short notice... not many things I can do other than last minute things. I currently have a e92 335 sport package on stock runflats. I'm thinking the stock tires won't be good for the drive out (northern route through Montana, Idaho) or the winter there and need to get something going soon!

So, the big question: Do I need winter tires in Portland, or can I get away with all-seasons? I'm planning on getting some snow cables for when I do something like go up to Mt. Hood. I doubt I'll head up there all that ofter, but hopefully I'll get up that way a few times this winter.

Right now I'm thinking if I do all seasons, I'd do them on the stock 18" rims (assuming SCC Z6 snow cables fit). If I do snows, I'm thinking a dedicated 17" rim.

Thoughts? Please don't tell me to trade for an xi or post just to tell me I'm an idiot... I already know those things, that's what my girlfriend is for.

Additionally, do I have to take the car to the dealer to get the TPMS paired with the car, or can I get into the menus to do that?

If you're getting separate tires for winter, winter tires would seem to make more sense than an all season. For a lighter snow area you could use one of the higher performance winter tires like the Conti TS810S or Pirelli 240. These won't be quite as effective in snow as the Blizzak LM25 or Dunlop Winter Sport 3D, but will offer better handling and steering response.

Yeah, that first SUV driver....

I agree with Greg though, if you are going to the "trouble" of buying an extra set of tires, you might as well get proper winter tires.
