Changed water pump and thermostat, now this
I changed my water pump and thermostat last weekend after seeing the usual failure codes. After installing, I topped coolant off and ran bleed test. I was able to hear the coolant swooshing thru the system for the first time since I bought this 2009 BMW 328i. Afterwards, I drove to the store (about 3 miles) in silence cause the car ran like a dream...super quiet and smooth.
I got what I needed from the store and started the car again. Instantly the low decibel whirling sound was back when I pulled off. That's been an issue since I've owned the vehicle. I figured that was water pump related after seeing others post about it. Ran the bleeding process again to find out it wasn't working anymore. There's a stream of coolant running back to the reservoir but no whooshing sound. Scanned vehicle to get speed deviation (2e81) and electric cooling pump missing (2e85). After feeling defeated, I called it a night. The next day I removed the water pump connector to clean old oil buildup from it. Used a voltmeter to check power wire with engine off. Unfortunately, I failed to get reading on communication wire. Then checked the power distribution tabs on the battery and everything read 12.4 volts. I located fuses and they all seem to be intact. Today, I've checked fuses and power distribution for voltage again and ran another scan. Here's what came up this time: DME/DDE (Engine electronics): Error code: 2E98 BSD, message; alternator: Missing, Fault currently not present, Missing, Fault does not activate warning light Environmental conditions: - Frequency: 11 - SAE fault code: U1132 - Logistics counter: 40 - Mileage/km reading: 207984 km | 208016 km | 208152 km - Time since end of starting: 0 s | 0 s | 0 s - Manufacturer code, generator 1: 255 - | 0 - | 255 - - Identification, generator type, generator 1: 255 - | 6 - | 255 - - Battery voltage: 13.57 V | 13.57 V | 13.57 V DME/DDE (Engine electronics): Error code: 2E85 BSD, message; Have you had any luck? I got a 08 328i when I first got it (6months ago) the PO said it overheats. Never experienced it.. till I did. So I replaced just the pump(6days ago) as the codes said it was missing. Drove just fine till yesterday it decided to overheat again. It’s like it only works when it wants to.
Would anyone happen to know what the water pump and tstat should read at the connector? Off and during bleeding process?? |

Hi, recently joined and need to reply to one post. Thankfully, this is similar/close to my issue. I am happy to repost in new thread...when allowed....in the meantime...
I have a recetly new to me 2013E92 335i N55. Warning "Coolant Too Low" Recently (last Friday) changed the Thermostat and Coolant reservoir (evidence of reservoir leaking. Not really used the car much during weekend. Today after driving some 50kms "Low Coolant" message appears again along with warning light. Drove about 2kms to Indy and slightly topped coolant again. Ran the Bleed procedure twice. Car was cooled down and when started again...."low Coolant" message came on as well as warning light. Allowed car to cool down again and check coolant level...was exactly where it should be. No Failure Codes for Water Pump or Thermostat. As discussed with original PO, my oil temp seems to be at the normal range when light and message cme on. Potential issue I coulnt understand.... 1. if you turn ignition on (not engine running)....water pump and circulates well....no air pockets etc 2. If you start engine....water pump stops circulating water (cant understand that one in particular) 3. Even when cooled down....the " Coolant too low" message and light stays on.... Is there a coolant reset button? Why would the pump operate (quite well)durin the Bleed process and not when engine running??? Any views/advice welcome. |

Hey just read your post and I am curious if you ever figured out the problem. I have alot of the same faults and it is really starting to bug me because I can't figure it out. I have the following faults 2E81, 2E83, 2E85, 2E8B, 2E98. Which is the electrical coolant pump speed deviation, electric coolant pump power reduced operation, electric coolant pump missing, intelligent battery sensor missing, alternator missing. I've reset codes and they come back. I have a brand new battery, replaced ibs all new, alternator is 2 yrs old and water pump is 2 yrs old.

It looks like the BSB (Bit Serial Bus) is not able to communicate to all these devices listed and as such it will start logging (default) faults for all of them. I noticed that when installing the water pump, you have to be very careful routing and positioning the harness of the pump and thermostat back in the original location. The harness is clipped to the lower mount of the water pump with a small spring which you need to transfer from the old to the new pump. It is easy to pinch the harness between the motor block and the pump when you are not careful, potentially shorting a wire to GND (engine/pump metal). It is also possible to put tension on the harness when not installed right, possible breaking wires internal to the plastic shroud. And there is co-located a GND (?) connection at the end of the harness near the pump that may have been compromised. Any of these issues will compromise the BSB I suspect.

Electric water-coolant pump bleeding
Youtube videos describing the electric water pump bleeding procedure (for my 07 X3 E83) are not clear as to radiator cap on or cap off during this procedure.
I tried "cap off" and had a fountain of coolant and a mess on the garage floor. I just installed the new pump and thermostat (FCP Euro), and will now flush with distilled, fill with BMW Blue 60-40, and run the bleeding procedure with "cap on." Your thoughts, please? |
