FRM3 - Safe to Update with K+DCAN Cable ?
Hello,
my FRM3 Module got repaired, but sometimes my windows loses its settings and I have to relearn these. My Car: E92 335d 2011 I think it might be the old Software of my FRM3. I have latest SP Daten files V67 and BMW Tools with imported Daten in WinKFP. Is it safe to update with an K+DCAN Cable and a good Power Supply ? Do I have to change settings in WINKFP before updating ? I thought, going in Comfort Mode, Entering my VIN, choosing the FRM3 Module and hit Progr. ZB Update. WINKFP chooses the newest ZB Number right ? Appreciate every help ! Thank you ! |

So is the process i mentioned right ?
Importing E89 SP Daten, Comfort Mode, Update ZUSB, Choose the right ECU (FRM3), write VIN and Progr. ZB Update ? Will WInkfp choose the right Files to flash ? |

Be very careful. The FRM3 is notorious for its issues.
Just for belt and braces, I'd highly recommend ensuring your battery is sufficiently charged, in case of a power failure, that it's of a recent age and you don't have any battery faults stored in the system. I narrowly avoided frying my FRM3 the other day due to lack of a decent battery. Started frightening myself with stuff I read online about the module spontaneously bricking itself through merely running a code scan and disconnecting/reconnecting the battery. That said, it is possible to repair them and there are plenty of people around who'll do it for £50 in the UK, so I imagine the same for the rest of Europe. |

For those doing this, the FRM module will go into failsafe mode turning all lights on which is 20 amp drain for just the headlights alone (halogens) and a few more for the rear lights, along with what the car is already drawing power wise.
Decent battery charge should be enough or jumped from another running BMW or approved charger (or you could disconnect the headlight bulb connectors temporarily). |
