OBDII cable vs wifi
I'm on the verge of purchasing the Bimmergeeks Master license and will use my Amazon Fire HD7 tablet (converted to run Googleplay store apps).
To connect, I am looking at the MHD orange wifi OBDII dongle. (or the Bimmergeeks Thor wifi dongle) We have 3 E90s and one E70 X-5 35d. No telling how long we will keep these, but when we do replace them, those new cars will likely be BMW F/G series somethings. Would it be advisable to get the Bimmergeeks OBDII cable, or would the MHD wifi adapter be perfectly fine? The overarching concern is whether the standard suite of BMW diagnostic/coding normally put on laptops works with those wifi dongles or do they require the cable? (I have only used the Schwaben handheld 510 device) |

I believe to use a laptop, you need the cable.
I've also noticed a trend lately of people complaining about problems when using the wifi adapters, specifically the orange MHD. Maybe I'm making this up as I don't own one, but that's the feeling I got as I visit the forums regularly. I've been considering buying one, so when someone mentions it, I pay attention. Not as many complaints about the green ProTool adapter, but it may not be as popular as the MHD, so not as many examples out there. |

I currently use the exact setup you're thinking about: MHD orange adapter with my Protools master license, MHD, xHP, etc.
Recently started using the MHD WiFi adapter after making the switch from a cable that never worked properly. Have been very happy with the performance and convenience of the WiFi adapter - codes / flashes extremely fast and always connects easily without issue. Separately, even more impressed with the Protool master license, the capabilities are pretty incredible once you've learned to use it. |
