80's Porsche vs e36 M3
I was wondering if you guys had a 20k spending limit which one of these cars would you choose as your weekend/nights driver?
Pros and Cons for both please and would it be easier to DIY one more than the other? I dont know which car would be more fun to drive but if someone has drivin both i would love to hear the diffrence between the two. Thanks. |

I would go for the Porsche, 1987 or newer with the G50 trans, the 915 sucks.
I had an E36 M3, and my parents have/had a 80's 911 that I have driven off and on since I got my license. The M3 is a great car, but to me it just isn't special. I sold it to a friend (at about 60,000 miles) and then drove it about a year later and it just felt like an old car. It sounds stupid but the air cooled 911 just has a ton of character and it is a much more connected car, manual steering that is perfect, a nice feel to the pedals and the sound of that engine gives me goose bumps (I may be biased), and the 3.2 is one of the most reliable engines out there. The cockpit is not luxurious, and the ergonomics are not great, the controls for the hvac make you say, 'what the hell were they thinking' but for a "fun" car it is great. |

For the record, the M3 is probably a better car, more capable of doing everything, but you are looking for a toy. The Porsche will be on the road long after the e36 M3 has been recycled into a Toyota, partially because it is more special but also because I think they are just build better. I think the e30 M3 is more visually exciting then the e36 M3 and its more of a "classic".
Get the Porsche, there really is no substitute.... |

I'd probably get an excellent 944S2 or 968, which will be cheaper, faster, handle better, and have heat and air conditioning that actually work. People in the know know that the Cayman is a superior platform to the 911 now, held back deliberately by Porsche and that's been true for about 20 years - the 944/968 were very well thought of compared to the 911. There's a famous Road and Track article where they compared the entire 1986 Porsche line-up - 911, 911 turbo, 928S, 944, and 944 turbo. The 944 turbo won. The 911 thing is something most car guys have to go through, and it'rare to find someone willing to consider any other Porsche. I was lucky - at the time I owned a 1983 911SC, I also owned a 1983 928S and 1983 944, so I could pick and choose among the range daily. If I were to buy an older Porsche again, it'd be a 944 variant. |

I agree on the 944 turbo. They were amazing track cars. I have a 1991 911 that has been an incredibly reliable car and still looks mint. I do dread the potential future repairs which will be costly to say the least.

Well, that would be unfair, as the cars are several generations apart. Personally, I'd take a Z4 3.0i over any Porsche 911 but the 993.
However, up until the 964 variant arrived any 911 you got was pretty much based on state-of-the-art technology... from 1963. They kept boring out the engine, and they went from one cranky form of primitive fuel injection to another, slightly less cranky form of fuel injection, but by 1989 the 911 was generations of development behind the rest of the Porsche range, and the car market in general. |
