MSD81 with Tuner Protection

Our sources at BMW claim that all MSD81 DMEs manufactured after 9/08 come with a "Tuner Protection" feature that prevents any use of piggybacks and/or reflashing of the DME itself.

Last week we received (our German importer Racing Dynamics Deutschland) a 335i with a 10/08 production date and, sure enough, we could not flash the DME as usual. We tried installing the Black Box with our standard release program, and the car would go into limp mode immediately. Apparently, the N54 equipped cars that will go for sale in the US as of November will have the same issues. I will keep you posted if I find out more about it. Please do the same.

If this is really the case, there will be a class-action suit against BMW.. no doubt in my mind. That is the most fucked up thing an automaker could do... they will get endless amounts of shit for it.

I doubt they will get a lawsuit for this... the only thing this will do is hurt its sales from enthusiasts like us, but in the end, we are only a small market share.. oh and no where does it state that all BMW cars *have* to be tunable. So there's no valid argument for suing them.

shiv why do you say this is nothing to worry about? is the v3 immune to the protection from the software update? or do you already have a solution?

I thought MSD81 with "tuner protection" came out in March of 08? Have they changed it even more?

Especially in the US with DMCA laws this is something within their rights.

Well, I guess our market is big enough for them to want to go through all of the trouble to keep us from tuning our cars. I feel like I'm reading a thread from a year ago about MSD81 and the choas that followed.

RDSport has never been 29.2 or v81 compatible, so its no wonder they went limp... for that, you need direct solenoid control, and fuel pressure control...(ala jb3/v3)... neither of which RDSport has.

Nothing to worry about guys...

There is always a way to tune the car, they said before the GTR came out that it is an untuneable car and look what happened now?? there are videos online of the new GTR, tuned................

I think maybe worst case scenario it will increase the limitation of TQ levels down low even more, but the car will be tuneable...........

Have you owned a FI car before? Every car is tuneable, just learning the new tricks of the ECU and thats it, some may be harder to tune then others though.......but the car will be tuneable..............
