I work in the ER and my "normal" schedule is a random 4 days/week at random times - days, nights, weekends, holidays, etc. I see people talk about getting a "weekend car" or car for when they go back road driving. Do normal people really do this? They get a Buick for the work week and a Lambo or M8 to drive on Saturday/Sunday? Or is it just an internet thought and term that people throw around? Do people really get a car to drive 2d/week?

yep...absolutely. we've owned two convertibles that were weekend cars. occasionally my wife would drive them to work on nice days when she knew she didnt have to run errands after work. we're currently without a weekend car because we now own cars for each of our kids. once they're out on their own, we will definitely buy another convertible. although, my new M2C will be pretty close to a weekend car. definitely not a full daily driver, since i'll keep the 228ix to help keep miles off of the M2C.
some of us even own "utility vehicles" that are used for specific purposes other than daily driving. i own a ford expedition that i use for towing a boat, trips to home depot / costco, and longer roadtrips with the whole family. it doesnt make sense for either my wife or me to drive the expedition every day but since it's been paid for since 2009, it's cheap to own and very useful when we need it.

I had a Jaguar XJ6 Series III that was not a daily driver. I drove it any day of the week, just not all days of the week consecutively. Does that fit the description of “weekend car” for you?

I suppose so. I guess maybe I'm starting to realize that people's term of "weekend car" is more just a drive occasionally when the weather is nice and I want something fun to drive car. Sounds better in my mind than a true weekend car. Kind of like people have weekend knives and watches.

My M3 is a weekend car, only because I need a big off-road capable SUV for my photography business.
I’d love to daily my M3, and drive it any chance I get, but it could never be my only car. |

Same here as for the only car. I can't do Ohio winters with the summer tires and thus have a Jeep, but it doesn't get driven too much in nice weather unless I have a need that Jeep can fulfill.

Yes, my M2C is my weekend car. I have a Subaru outback as a daily. I work rotating shift work including weekends so it's really my off time car.

I have a garage queen that sees around 2k miles/year. It is not even driven once a week.
It depends on where you live and how much you want to spend on cars. I have 5 cars, 2 track dedicated ones, 2 daily drivers and then the garage queen. |

I do and have had one for close to 20 years. Started by me wanting and getting my 3rd 300ZX (this one a TT model) many years ago, but not wanting it for a DD and kept my SUV. It stuck. I love having a manual car in the garage, and have since that day, but don't want to drive one each day.
I also have a semi-stressful job that I tend to take home with me, so I like to find weekend cars that need a little TLC and slowly bring them back to life. it's a great stress reliever. I've been known to have more than one at a time. Currently I have just about finished a E85 Z4 that I stumbled onto that needed some love and it turned out to be a pretty fun little weekend car. My girl loves taking rides in it and it is very cheap to buy and own. Does not need to be a Lambo, it can be whatever brings a smile to your face. I'm currently looking for a Porsche to start working on which will send the Z4 down the road - but it's been worth having - lots of smiles per mile.

I've got two vehicles my M3 comp as my daily and my wife's Mazda CX5 for groceries, road trips, etc. And if I need even more utility I have my dad's Tundra I can borrow anytime.
I would love to add a weekend/nice weather manual transmission sports car but right now I'm saving up for a new house. |

It's a very tricky topic for those with 2 cars already.
Once things get back to normal, wife uses the family SUV, that is easy. I use a 10 year old Saab wagon to commute maybe 5 mins, 3 days a week and weekend errands with kids. I am buying a toy car one way or another, question is do i dedicate to a 3rd car which is a) annoying with one garage and b) costs me about $2500 a year in insurance and running costs on the saab? Other option is to compromise, say something that can be driven more, like say a Mustang, pros are I enjoy the 8 everytime i drive and save a whack of cash. 3rd option is get the proper sports car, drive it in warmer months and uber in winter. |

I drive a $3k honda civic Monday to Friday and an M2C on the weekend and I love it! For me, it's a no-brainer.

My 135i is my "weekend" car.
I have a truck that I drive regularly. The wife also has a daily car. I drive the 135i whenever the weather is nice, but don't see the point in commuting in it. It's just a waste of miles.

I do, or did...well, guess I still do. Just hasn't left the driveway in a few years. A little different from most on here, it's my grandad's old truck. Not especially quick or anything, but it is interesting to drive coming from a much simpler time. Like riding a massive wave of torque from one gear to the next. Push the pedal harder though, and other than making a good deal more noise, things don't really get all that much more motivated. And of course the gas gauge drops two gallons if you even think about looking at it, even though it's not that big of a truck.
Still, neat to drive, and got memories. I really need to get it back on the road sometime.
