Question Guys with bigger turbos...suggestions for a tuner?

I've been talking to Rob and I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a set of RB Two's soon. I'm trying to do some research ahead of time on who might be a good tuner to use....someone that can respond fast, and isn't backed up so much that it takes weeks to get tune revisions back to me. I've got a pretty standard setup.....nothing exotic. Looking for around 500hp, so with the RB Twos that should be pretty doable.

Suggestions for tuners that I could reach out and communicated with?

Thanks!

I also bought the same turbos from rob and asked him who he recommend, he listed out some of the big names I've heard and then a guy named Justin Hubenak or V8bait on the forums. I reached out to him and he quoted me $300 and then $30 for any retune for additional upgrades. We went through about ten revisions in roughly two months, mostly being me waiting for the roads to dry. He always responded within ~36 hours most of the time during the same day, and would try his best to tell me what he's changing. But ultimately he gave me a great tune as well as great service, would recommend. His email is jrhubenak@gmail.com.

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback. Yes, Rob did mention him as one of the guys to contact. How does the tuning process work? You just log a run...email it to him, and then wait for an updated tune....and then repeat? What were some issues that needed adjustments?

How do you like the new RB Two's? How do they compare to the stock turbos? And what kind of boost are you pushing with them?

Yes, he asks for two logs usually unless your diagnosing a specific issue he will ask for more. He makes adjustments and sends back a new map. I had some weird AFR issues that he tried to fix with fuel scaling (whatever that means) but it turned out to be injector related. So in that case he asked for a cold start log.

I love the new turbos, much much faster than stock and you can really feel it up top. For me, since I am only tuned on 92 oct, I target roughly 20-21 psi and they have no problem holding that to redline on less than 50% wgdc. With that, he said the turbos have plenty more power, but with my fueling and the fact that I still have stock tmap, I am about maxed out. I wish Oregon had some e85, I figure I could make another 100whp.

Do a log in 3rd gear and maybe just a little in 4th if you have room and send it to him. Justin took about 3 revisions to fine tune my e85 map. I have RBs GF 17t and they absolutely rip on full e85.

My main concern is how fast different people respond. I've heard horror stories of guys taking days/weeks to respond with an updated tune....that stinks.

I emailed V8bait, Doc Vu, Wedge, and a few other places....I'm curious to see how long it takes them to respond. Hopefully it won't take to long to dial in a tune for my setup...it's all pretty standard bolton stuff plus the RB Two turbos.

On a side note...are the TWO Plus turbos worth an extra $200 if I'm not planning on doing anything more with my fuel system? Currently I'm running a Bucketless Walbro 450 LPFP. Don't want to mess with HPFP overdrive setups or PI.

From my experience, Wedge responds anywhere from 1 day to 1 week but on average mostly every 3 days. Twisted tuning takes 2 to 4 weeks. Motiv usually responds within a day, not always including weekends.

2-4 weeks for a revision?? So if it took 4 revisions to get the tune right it could take 2-4 months?? Hell no!! That's nuts!

I have had multiple setups tuned by Justin (V8Bait) excellent tuner. He has a full time job so he sometimes doesn't respond super fast. He is pretty upfront about his availability. My experience with Motiv was very slow response times and I have heard the same about Wedge. Check out David Shoup Tuning. It is his full time job, I have heard nothing but good things and fast turn around times.

I shot an email out to David yesterday also.....no replay as yet from him either, or Justin. I did get a fast reply from Ken at Wedge, and several more follow up emails. Right now, I'm leaning towards letting him tune my car since he's so fast to respond, and is happy to explain things and give plenty of details. I'm very impressed with Wedge so far.

I've heard nothing but good things about Wedge.

- Wedge seems to be the go to guy.
- RK tunes makes awesome tunes but doesn't like tuning n54s
- Brentuning makes some big numbers on n54s
- V8bait is known for the best cold start maps on e85
- Heard really good things about doc Vu especially for single turbos

I went with twisted tuning and I'm happy with the tune. Though it did take about 5 days for the initial response, every subsequent map revision was at most 2 days. I have heard good things with V8bait and he's expanded the knowledge on this platform in many ways most don't realize.

Went to Doc Vu and never looked back. Got my car dailed in on pump fuel in 3 days/5 revisions and currently working on Flexfuel Ethanol maps.

Be sure to check out RB's history and ways of doing on the BMW forums like b immerboost. I would never give this a-hole my money no matter how good his turbo's are.
Wow.....so far I've had the exact opposite experience with Ken from Wedge. Super responsive, super friend, and replies back to my emails in less than an hour or two. And as far as tuning goes, I don't think anyone would argue that he knows what he's doing. What did the problem on your car turn out to be?

As far as Rob at RB goes....I've never heard anything bad about him or his turbos. The consensus is that RB and Pures are the best out there. His shop is only a few hours away from me, so that's nice too. That being said, I've heard plenty of bad stuff about Tony at VTT.....but it's hard to tell what's true or not on web forums, you really only ever hear one side of the story.

I've emailed both of those guys several days ago....neither one has responded yet. If someone doesn't have the time to take 30 seconds to respond to an email, I'm not sure I want to roll the dice on how long it's going to take them to get me an upgraded tune.

It looks like response depends a lot on how busy they are?

Your turbos aren't even installed yet though, so it's not like you are ready either.

Good thing.....that's why I'm checking everything out ahead of time so I'm not waiting on a time when I am ready....

I would definitely go with RB's if I had to do twins or Pure. You can't go wrong with either, but I think RB 2+ are plenty!

Go search for the VTT vs RB discussions if you want to have a good laugh. Both these guys are just horrible.

For turbo: If you are sticking with the small TD03 compressor housing, i'd deff go with the china's with the turbolab upgrade kit but you are limited to some 20 psi for longlevity.
If you really want things to flow and run 25psi+, you need to upgrade to a full TD04 housing like Hydra 800's or MMP. Allthough you need to know what you are doing when going the MMP route as you'll need to check the turbo's for proper operation yourself and you won't have to expect any warranty.
Says RB is jackass, then says go buy Chinese turbos or hydra 800 or MMP and expect no warranty,
