I understand that the crisis is mostly due to the rental car companies selling their fleets. How short sighted. Did they really think the pandemic would last forever?

Yeah, I know. Granted it was or has been a tough time for these companies. IIRC Hertz even went Chapter 11 and sold off most of their fleet to stay afloat. I'm not going to pretend to know how to run their business but when I saw this story I was like WTH? I know I personally have not rented a car in over a year nor have I been on an airplane but hope that will change soon.

This is going to add a new wrinkle into trip planning. We used to get airline tix way in advance and then book hotels and cars later. Now you really have to check the prices on everything so you don't get smacked with a big unforeseen cost or find yourself without a place to stay.

Have they mentioned anything about the cost of rentals?

Maui is $1,100 per week total price for a rental car on Booking.com. That's "only" $157 per day.

I'm paying $1780 for Tahoe rental in FL for two weeks. I'm basically paying twice what I did last year.

It would appear that due to immediate shortsighted outlooks and shareholder needs, virtually most of our companies / industries went full retard...

Planes are in storage, demand is coming back... not enough planes... ppp funds blown, employees laid off and now a lack of workers.

Restaurants... lack of workers due to stimulus.

Rental cars... you just described it.

Manufacturing / semiconductor shortages....

Again... every one imho went full retard during this pandemic.

Yup, American consumers get lectured about not having emergency savings, but apparently the business sector is even worse. No rainy day funds for most of these stupid companies.

I have a planned trip that has been postponed once already...i'm hoping it won't get canceled again. We have a car already on hold nowhere NEAR the stupid prices they have right now. They better troll the used car dealers & get some cars back.

I once rented a Charger for a week in Kauai for $155 bucks for the week! Never got that deal again. LOL

And that's on the tiny island of Kauai! May never see that again.

Interesting you mentioned this. The company I work for just took out a multi-million $ federal loan as part of new package of relief loans. By way of the loan structure, the feds are basically scolding us for not having enough savings built up (Which is true. We spend like crazy and run super lean when it comes to saving). The loan forbids executive level profit sharing distributions for the duration (5 years) and then for 1 additional year AFTER the loan is paid off. We can re-finance that debt through a private bank at any time but the 1 year moratorium on distributions remains.

Just booked a car (Camary) in San Fran in July, 12 days for $670, a bit higher than previous trips but not too bad given... Will say I am keeping fingers crossed there is actually a car there when I arrive!

Actually that's a really good price I think, especially for SF? Are you renting from one of the majors?

Budget via Costco travel...

Edit: as I said, just hoping there is actually a car there! Even pre COVID I’ve arrived to find the car I booked was not available...
