Timing Jumped in n54?
Hey guys, my 2009 e92 recently quit on me, it has a very rough idle that jumps about 200 rpm when it's running now. When I drive it above 1000 rpm it seems to run fine. But as soon as I let off and the rpm dips back to idle it begins to get very choppy. The car is in limp mode with an engine light on.
I took it to a local shop who came to the conclusion that my timing chain had jumped a tooth. This is very uncommon on the n54. I recently pulled codes from it and it gave me 15 different codes. I will list them below. Any thoughts or ideas as to what else it could be would be greatly appreciated. |

The only thing I can think of that might cause codes like that would be VANOS solenoids, other than that, especially with the crank position sensor code combined with the camshaft timing retarded codes definitely point towards the timing skipped. I have never heard of this on the N54 though, might be a good idea to pull your valve cover and get the engine to TDC, just to take a look at the timing. There is a timing tool you can buy for relatively cheap, also called a cam lock, this tool might be able to indicate to you if your timing skipped or not.

Just to clarify, get your crank to TDC, should be a mark on the crank hub pulley, and then install the cam lock tool, I bought one for my engine build and it fits pretty tight even when the timing is perfect. So if the timing skipped a tooth, you'll know when the cam lock wont go on.

Could be crank hub slip. Happens sometimes, usually at pretty big power/aggression.

Was leaning toward that, I will have to pull valve cover first and ensure that timing has jumped. Although I wasn't doing a pull when it quit, driving through a 30km/h school zone actually lol.
