BMW E90 330d whitish smoke without DPF

Hi.

I removed the DPF a year ago. Because, I removed the swirl flaps because they were leaking oil, and no one knew to say that if you removed the swirl flaps that your DPF would clog. Why, because swirl flaps play an essential role in DPF regeneration. The DPF plugged in too much that it paid off for nothing but to take it out and program it. But left catalytic converter. EGR also left.

Everything was fine. Until recently. When I noticed smoke on acceleration. I gave a friend to drive, I was behind, and at an acceleration between 1800 - 3000 rpm, white - gray smoke comes out.

I know there should be some smoke without dpf. But that hasn't happened before.

No coolant consumption at all. (never). Some oil consumption but I would say its normal. There is no change before and after DPF removal.

The car has power and behaves quite normally. Only that smoke irritates me. Every time when floor it, I imagine it smoking like a chimney.

Anyone had similar experiences? What could it be, turbo, engine breather,...?

To my knowledge swirl flaps just help create air vortexes and give low end power. Their only function is to increase airflow (at low rpm) and... occasionally fall into the intake.

DPF clogs when there is engine/injector problems.

Or it is just full of ashes and time to clean it.

I suppose turbo is leaking oil into the intake = oil filled flaps = DPF more frequent regens.

Put DPF back and there is no smoke.

What is water consumption?

Not really, should not consume oil. Service says 1L per 1000km is normal. What is your normal?

If your engine is worn use thicker oil 5w40 instead of 5w30. Now without DPF you can use cheaper oil (without the low ash specification).

DPF is quite nice indicator for the engine health. If it clogs you have to find a root cause and fix it.
If you remove DPF because it clogs too often you still have some sort of problem.

EGR has quite important role here. Speeds up engine warming = cleaner burning & burns some unburnt diesel.
Swirl flaps - not so much if anything.

Removing swirl flaps will result in a bit more soot being created at low rpm, but it shouldn't be enough to necessitate removing the dpf. I'd bet you've got a failing/failed injector, and that's been the cause of your dpf issues all along.

I thought coolant consumption. (Sorry, not english speaker)

I dont know. Thats how they said in workshop. They tried forced dpf regen but there were insane pressure in dpf. They recommend cleaning dpf, but they do not guarantee that they will not clog again.

Last time dpf did regeneration was 2000 km before it clogged. Thats when I removed swirl flaps.

Oil consumption is around 0.8 liter per 5000 km.

I will check injectors.
