Front Intake Scoops...good for reducing IAT'S or just for looks?

I see lots of 335i's running around with the aftermarket intake scoops that attach behind the kidney grills. Are they actually good for reducing intake air temps....or are they purely for looks and nothing but a gimmick?

I would imagine they do something...but nothing substantial. But I have no proof.

Can't see how they would lower intake temps!

Depends on your intake setup. If you have a closed system like oem, they wouldn't do much. It would be like blowing into the end of a vacuum.
If you have and open set up like dci, I could see them help fresh air being directed into the engine bay.
The air is still going through a hot turbo. I don't think the temps would be improved at all.

The IAT is completely unchanged by them, they help to increase air flow (and bugs) but also for looks yes.

I still enjoyed having those afe scoops on, the GruppeM intake I have now has them built in and I am under the impression they did some CFD work on the intake so there for a reason. They're black (cf) too so can't see them at all anymore.

But aren't you going to switch to relocated inlets still? If you were getting like PR inlets I wouldn't bother, but I would get those scoops with something like this:

Or, maybe just get the Raceport and sell your TialQ . I just put in the correct springs and this thing is loud!

If you get relocated inlets you can always run the 335d scoop to draw the air to the passenger side. That's what I did and I'm still going to do the same when I install my single turbo kit. Those scoops just help draw in the air, but I don't think it will help with intake temps.

Consider how the stock system works, the engine naturally sucks air in, the turbos suck even more air in. It's a high pressure area where the scoops go, so the air naturally wants to go into the intake (a low pressure area).

That said I have them on mine for 2 reasons. First and foremost I painted mine to match my theme and wanted a subtle accent. And second I have a hot side intake, and once I get the duct for the 335d installed I'm hoping that it will push some ambient air over there. Keep in mind I don't have a sealed intake like the stock that vacuums air from the front of the car, but just sucks it from the hot engine bay.

As for the air temp, I did try the 335d duct (borrowed from a friend for a test), and i didn't see enough of a difference that I could say, "that was from the scoop." With the stock box in place. You might see a small temp benefit.

All in all I'd say if you are after performance benefits, you won't see it. If you think it looks cool, go for it.
