Sticky binoculars
So my boys just ran in the house and said there's an eagle flying overhead hunting. They said It had a white head so I ran outside with my Bushnell binoculars that have been in a belt case. I pulled them out and the rubber parts are all sticky and tacky. It left a black tar on my hands it took a while to scrub off. I used and antibacterial wipes to clean them but that didn't help. Any suggestions?

No medical adhesive remover pads in your toolbox? I have a lifetime supply, and they are the first thing that I reach for when trying to clean sticky/gooey messes.....

If the rubber is perished there is no fix other than replacement. Any sort of goo remover or solvent will at best provide only a (very) temporary solution.
This used to happen a lot to SCUBA masks when they were made from rubber. No longer an issue with silicone versions. |

Let us know if you find a way to clean the rubber that keeps it from further degradation. My experience is, once the rubber starts to fail from whatever reason, I couldn’t stop it.
I have a small cal hunting life with part of my safe bottom pad attached to the butt stock. No longer sticky.

Am I a bad person for filing away the 'hey look, a real bald eagle' routine as a good set up for the classic 'black rings prank' with binoculars?
And if you are into raptors, route 20 through the south end of the Montezuma reserve has some super cool nest pads up on the power poles, lots of hawks and some eagles nesting and hunting every time I go thru there. |

Not answering the OP question - but I have 2 properties and one is vacant most of the time, so I don't like to leave expensive things like guns or my expensive binos there, but I also hated to pack them back and forth. I got tired of wanting to look at something out in the field and not having mine when I needed them, so I did about 1 minutes worth of looking and bought these.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Wow - was I surprised. I expected a turd I could maybe see a deers antlers with, but these are actually pretty good bino's. Would they stand up to heavy hunting and a beating like my Zeiss have? Dunno - but for having by the back door when you want to see something - they are pretty damn good. I think the first pair I bought was like $27. I bought another pair to throw in the back of my SUV. I've had them for a few years - and no problems at all and if they get stolen or broke - I could car less. FWIW - carry on.
