Wastegate rattle n55
I have a 2011 e92 with a little over 82000 miles on the dash. 2 days ago for the first time i noticed a rattling noise during deceleration when i would take my foot off the gas and briefly when i would put my foot on the gas and then it would go away. Since last night it has got louder and more frequent and also occurs when starting the car. From doing some research on the forums and online it seems like it may be the wastegate rattle. Am i screwed? My car is fully stock and i was just about to start modding it . Will i have to replace the turbos? I've never worked on cars myself and i don't think i'll be able to afford a 5-6k repair. Can it be something else? It seems like this problem is not common on the n55 in comparison to the n54 engine. What should i do? I'm kind of bummed out by it

You don't need to do anything. My car has had this same rattle for the last 85,000 miles I've owned it, and I'm at 130,000 now. It's never gotten better, never gotten worse, and I haven't had any issues because of it. As far as I'm concerned, it's normal. If it's not normal or out-of-spec, it hasn't done anything bad and you can ignore it.

But it literally sounds like something is messed up in the car you know what i mean? If i got a bmw, it shouldn't sound like that on the road imo. Also the sound got so much louder and more frequent in just a day.

Can you post a sound clip? You shouldn't hear it on the road while driving. You should really only hear it at a cold start or at idle with the windows down.

Well things just got terribly bad. I will post the sound clips but i was driving and making the video and the check engine light came up and the red oil sign came up. I tried driving home but the car died on me. I parked to the side and there's oil all over the floor
I actually can't figure out how to post the video. I'm new to the forum |

Oh wow, that sounds like rod knock to me, not wastegate rattle. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately your rod bearings are toast. Do not continue to drive it. You'll need to have your rod bearings inspected and replaced. The engine is potentially saveable, but a shop will need to make that determination. In a worst case scenario you'll need a new engine.
Did you have any work done to it recently, such as the Oil Filter Housing Gasket? |

A little under a year ago i did get all the major oil gaskets replaced from a bmw indy. I feel so stupid for driving it and thinking it's waste gate rattle. Is it even worth replacing the rod bearings? How much would it cost me around? Will my engine ever be the same again even if the engine is saveable? Am i better off just moving on to another car? Also is it possible the shop messed up on something as i did change all the gaskets. I'm pretty sure after what just transpired they will definitely not come clean and take the hit for such a big issue tho.

Were you able to dial this to confirm its your wastegate and not your exhaust rattle? You need to confirm that, as the exhaust flap gets weakened and causes annoying rattle. There's a fix for the exhaust. With MHD you can also try to control waste-gate rattle.
