What's the tallest (not widest) tire I can fit?

I have a stock 2007 e93 335i with 230 series wheels, running runflat OEM 225/35/19 on the front and 255/30/19 on the rear.

I cannot stand the noise and harshness of the standard tires, and am terrified everytime I go over a bump that I am going to damage the rims. Therefore I want to replace the tires with a taller (higher profile) tire. Run flat is not important to me, nor do I need high-speed handling etc. I just want to keep my stock rims, I do not want to have to do any bodywork or suspension mode.

So, using the original 19" 230 wheels, and not going any wider than 225 front and 255 rear, what is the highest profile I can go up to? 45 front 40 rear, bigger??

Once again, I have no need for super handling, I just want to be able to drive over potholes without fearing for my wallet, and to have a softer ride, and not to have so much noise when going over lane dividers, etc.

Suggestions?

I think any slight increase in sidewall height you may gain won't be enough to soften your ride. The giant 19" wheels are the problem.

The taller side wall profile will throw off your speedometer. First off, try replacing your RFTs with non-RFT and see if there's any improvements.

I was bored once and tried figuring out how much extra sidewall I could get away with. From memory, I believe if you switch to 235/35/19 and 265/30/19's, you will get an extra 1/8th inch of sidewall while still staying within the 3% boundary.

Take the rear tires for example:
255 * .30 = 76.5 mm = 7.65 cm = 3.01 in of sidewall
265 * .30 = 79.5 mm = 7.95 cm = 3.13 in of sidewall

//Edit: Using the calculator at the top of these forums is pretty useful. Just make sure the % difference is no greater than 3%

going to non runflat tires will make a huge difference for you. Try the General Exclaims since you said super handling is not your biggest concern. They are "cheap" and have a softer sidewall than most 19" tires, so they will be even smoother than most tires.

fyi- I switched from 18" runflats to 19" generals and my ride was MUCH smoother.

dont try and get all fancy, just go from your current run flats to identical non runflats thats all you need.

you can go to 265/30/19's in the rear fyi, might be the smallest bit more sidewall.

Yup, its the runflats that are causing all the noise and the harsh ride. Switch to non-runflats and youll experience a huge difference

+1 This is definitely a run flat issue as the RFTs have a much stiffer sidewall than a standard tire.
