replacing one tire on a xi model..

Hi,

I have an '08 335xi with the sport pkg with the 18" rim option and corresponding bridgestone 18" RFTs.

I nailed a pothole pretty hard and it's bulged/bubbled. The steel cable has likely broke, a bulge has now appeared in 2 more places. It's not losing air but getting noisy/bumpy at speed.

I only have about 15k miles on these and the tread was 'ok'. I'd say they're about 1/2 way worn down.

If I get a new tire on this rim, it will have a brand new tread. I've heard this is a 'no-no' especially for AWD vehicles, they all need to be at similar tread depth or the differential gets pissed, or the gods get angry, or something along those lines.

Is this a valid concern? If so, is there a way to remove some of the tread on the new one so that it better matches the other 3, so I can continue to use them instead of throwing them away when they're only halfway through their life?

I'm guessing this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it.

Thanks!

i have heard the same thing too. i used to have an Audi Quattro, and that was a definite
no no. i also have a 2008 335xi w/ a sport package (nice set up hu), but i don't have the answer for you. is it the front or back, you do know the back tires are wider. if it is the front, w/ 15K on it you should be ok, since most of the wear is in the back. If you ask Tire Rack, you know they will want to sell you 2 new tires. Best bet might be the dealer or a tech here or on BMA CCA. I don;t think you need to b e a member to ask a question. i'll be looking fro your answer in case i run into the same problem.

I wouldn't replace a single with that kind of mileage. I'm surprised yours aren't worn a lot more than that. My michelins have 5600 on them and they probably have less than 1/2 tread left. I won't get more than 10000 miles out of them.
