Power Steering Service

I'm going to do a PS flush and reservoir replacement here soon for maintenance @110k. Second time doing the fluid flush, first time was just with a turkey baster and kept original reservoir. Question though is should I go through and replace all the lines too while I'm at it for preventative, or just wait and replace if they start to leak? Couldn't really find a good diy on just the lines replacement either, but guess it couldn't be too bad, just get some line tools.

TIA

I have this air powered brake fluid vac. You can use it to suck all the old fluid out. I do that by having the car on & have a buddy turn the wheel over & over while I suck out the fluid.

I did change out the all the lines going to the pump & rack & cooler, but that's it. I did that at 150-60k I think & only after I noticed that the lines were sweating fluid. 🤷*♂️.

I use Amsoil ATF for my power steering fluid. I have been doing that since 100k. I now have 183,000 miles & I still have the original rack & pump.

I always add fluid back in by having a buddy turn the steering wheel over & over while I add fluid & watch, while the car is on. I then, suck it all out and repeat the process. That seems to get out all the crap out & leave only fresh fluid in.

Thanks for the tips, but I will be doing it by myself. I much preferred Vehiculars' method to draining it straight from the rack itself. Why not just use the Pentosin chf 11s though?

I take it you left out replacing the heavier duty pressure hose then, just the 3 ancillary hoses if I read that right? Did you need any special tools?

Pentosin chf 11s is just a brand. There's nothing really special about it other than it's green & costs more. I have an Amsoil membership. So, I get 25% off retail. Almost every major manufacturer uses ATF for its power steering fluid. Amsoil is fully synthetic, so I opted for this instead. Like I stated earlier, I changed over at 100,000 miles. At 183,000 miles now & still on the original rack & pump w/ no issues. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.

You will need this tool to get the lines off the cooler.

I replaced every hose but this one below. At $238.00, it it isn't broke, don't fix it.

I've seen posts where people who drained it from the rack had issues, so I got a little spooked on that method. So, I just vacuumed it out instead.

I did a slight variation to Vehiculars' method which I think is better/simpler.

Basically you just unplug the return hose from the reservoir and put another hose in it to route to a drain pan. Then plug the res with like a vaccum cap. Then fill the res and turn the wheel side to side with the front jacked up and do that until clean fluid comes out. Refill res as needed during the process.
