Australian members, I have quick questions...
my girlfriend and i are planning a vacation to take some time in mid september. we would really like to go to Australia because we've never been there and it seems like a beautiful country, from pictures.
my question is, what's the weather like in mid-September in Sydney? we're looking for lots of beach time and hot weather. if it's not hot there at that time of the year, what's a good place to go then (Adelaide, Perth?) i know Sydney is probably the most expensive city in AU to stay in, but are there some little, but still cool coastal towns that would be cheaper or better to go to? thanks a bunch!

Have a great time.
We lived in Perth for about 8 years and returned to the US about 2 years ago. We miss Australia dearly and plan to return sometime (we actually became Australian citizens while we were there). The best time to go as far as Sydney, Perth or any of the other "southern" cities is Feb - April (which are their summer months) if your looking for hot weather and beach time. The farther North you go the longer the summer season. The Great Barrier Reef is fun if you scuba/snorkel - go to the outer reef. Depending on where you end up deciding to go do a little reasearch in terms of Jelly Fish, rain, etc which may effect your timing a little - especially if you go far north. Many beautiful spots to stay along the coast outside of the big cities - the best thing if you have the time is travel up and down the coast rather than staying in one particular area. The west coast (Perth) is a lot more laid back, beaches less crowded, cheaper (it terms of capitol cities) but another 4-5 hours by plane from Sydney. Sydney of course has the harbour, opera house, etc. It all depends on what you want to do and how long you have. My wife's parents flew to Sydney and rented a camper van and spent 3 months driving 3/4 the way around the country - had a great time. |

You might want to go to Queensland...Gold Coast or up north more to get near that beach weather you want cos it's usually hotter up there.

is it cold at that time of the year or is it just not hot? i'm reading everywhere that it's in high 60-ties. that's a nice weather. but if it's colder than that, i'll probably have to reconsider the whole vacation.

I agree, compared to the winter months in Pittsburgh the weather in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth is not "cold" but you could ht days where the highs are 50-60F.
Not really beach weather. If your set on Sept look at going further North - Cairns, etc. We spent a week in Broome at that time of year. Weather much warmer, beaches were empty, not much to do outside of the beaches (can do a pearl tour, salt water croc farm, camel tour, etc) but quiet at night although we did find a roadhouse with live music, lots of drinking, etc. |

thanks for the advice! we'll have to sit down and talk about it with my girl.
do you think it will uncomfortable cool just for touring the area (Sydney)? i mean, just take walks around, visit places, basically be 90% of the time outside doing things. if i wear a t-shirt the whole time (during the day), am i going to be cold?

It all depends on the weather - highs could be 70's or could be in the 50's.
Thre is a lot to do - if you have 2 weeks or so, a week in Sydney to see the sights of the city (opera house, zoo, the rocks, harbour, etc) along with surrounding area (blue mountains, B&B's in the wine districts, etc) and then head up North for some heat even an island resort (check out the Hayman resort we stayed there over X-mas one year - pricy but beautiful). |

I live in a place called Wollongong which is 1hr south of Sydney. September is a great time to visit. The weather is warming up, people are starting head to the beach and the water temperature is'nt too bad.
You can definitely get away with wearing a t-shirt during Septmeber. Average temperature is 75 - 80. As for beaches you can head to places such as Bondi or Manly. I recommend you head down to Wollongong as it has endless coastlines and you won't get the crowded beaches as they are in Sydney. If you need more advice or info, i'm more than happy to help. Cheers. |

we've cancelled the trip for this year as we were not prepared for it at all. we're going on a cruise instead. i know, it's lame, but i've never been on a cruise before so we'll see.
i definitely hope to go next year, though.
